ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated the UMBC Retrievers by a 10-7 count Saturday (March 25) inside Michigan Stadium. Senior Ian King and sophomore Brent Noseworthy led the way for the Wolverines offensively, each contributing a hat trick, while senior Mikie Schlosser tied a career high with four points (two goals and two assists), all coming in the first half. After giving up an early goal to the Retrievers, the Wolverines responded with three of their own, the first two coming from Schlosser and the third coming from Noseworthy. U-M's three-goal lead was cut to two when UMBC junior Max Haldeman scored his second of the period with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The second quarter showcased the same scoring pattern as the first, starting with a goal by the Retrievers, followed by three goals from Michigan and finished with another goal for UMBC at the end of the stanza. The first two goals for the Wolverines were scored by sophomore Decker Curran and King, both coming off assists from Schlosser to give him four first-half points. Noseworthy finished the goal streak off the assist from sophomore Rocco Sutherland. UMBC recorded the last goal of the half, scoring with 1:23 on the clock. The second half started off as a defensive battle with both teams being held scoreless until UMBC ended the drought after more than the nine-and-a-half minutes of action. Curran answered for the Wolverines exactly one minute later, before UMBC responded again to bring the Retrievers within one towards the end of the period. Noseworthy completed his hat trick with a putback with six seconds left in the quarter to make the count 8-6 in favor of the Wolverines heading into the final period. After another nine minutes of scoreless play, King scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead to four and cap off his hat trick performance. The Michigan defense stood strong, not allowing a goal until the final seconds to make the final score 10-7. Junior/sophomore Tommy Heidt had himself a day in goal, recording more saves (8) than goals allowed (7). Mike McDonnell went 11-of-21 at the dot while scooping five ground balls, which tied for a team high with fellow junior Chase Young. Senior Andrew Hatton and sophomore Nick DeCaprio led the defensive efforts for the Wolverines, each recording a team-high two caused turnovers.
