PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s lacrosse defeated UMass Lowell, 11-4, on Tuesday, March 21 at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass. The Friars opened the first quarter with an impressive offensive effort registering three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Joshua Keller (Grand Rapids, Mich.) put the Friars on the board at 10:42 after slipping past a Riverhawk defenseman. Freshman Damon Currie (Guelph, Ontario) gave the Friars a two-goal advantage off of a sidearm shot at 9:40. The Friars struck for the third time in the first quarter when Ian Grey (Clifton Park, N.Y.) registered a goal, assisted by James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario). UMass Lowell opened the second quarter with a quick goal at 12:45 by Austin Lane. The Riverhawks tested Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) with multiple shots but Boyce was able to stop UMass Lowell’s attack and recorded seven saves during the first half. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) responded with back-to-back goals at 6:52 and 5:12, respectively, to give the Friars a 5-1 lead at the half. Grey registered the first goal of the third quarter and his second goal of the game at 8:03, assisted by Austin Goltz (Orchard Park N.Y.). Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) continued the Friars dominant presence on the attack putting a goal away with 5:57 remaining in the third quarter. Riverhawk Jon Phillips responded at 4:09 with a goal, cutting the Friars' lead to five (7-2). Hatzipetrakos (00:34) and Conner Byrne (00:06) (Hicksville, N.Y.) registered two goals with under one minute to play, giving Providence a 9-2 edge. The Friars posted a 4-1 run over the Riverhawks in the third quarter. Leahey scored the Friars 10th goal of the game after weaving past the Riverhawk defense with 9:44 remaining in the game. Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) followed with his first career goal for the Friars with 3:00 on the clock in the fourth quarter. Riverhawk Keenan Koswin answered at 2:10 to put UMass Lowell on the scoreboard, 11-3. UMass Lowell’s Brandon Beland posted the final tally of the game with 26 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to make the final score 11-4 in favor of Providence. The last time the Friars held an opponent to just four goals was in 2015 against Boston Univeristy (7-4). The Friars recorded their fifth win of the season and improve to 5-3 overall. The Riverhawks move to 2-7 on the year. “Our guys came out ready to play from the first whistle” Coach Gabrielli stated. “We executed and played hard. It was a great night to play under the lights and our guys took advantage of the opportunity. We had a lot of strong performances, but I thought Tate Boyce stood out with a terrific night in the cage!” The Friars will be back in action in Providence, R.I. on Sunday, March 26 against Drexel University at 1:00 p.m.
