A strong first half helped the Towson University men's lacrosse team, ranked 12th in the most recent Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, stave off a fourth-quarter surge by Georgetown at the Hoyas' Cooper Field. Towson (2-0) was held scoreless over the final 21 minutes of the game, but thanks to a 10-goal first half, had enough of a gap to withstand the Georgetown (0-3) run. Towson took home the nail-biting win 11-10. How it Happened The Tigers jumped out to a big 2-0 lead with goals just 10 seconds apart. Ryan Drenner opened the game's scoring with a marker at 10:28 as Brian Bolewicki hit him with a cross-crease feed. Just 10 seconds later, Alex Woodall won the ensuing faceoff and ran down the middle of the Hoya defense to score his first of the season. Georgetown cut the lead in half on a Daniel Bucaro goal at 7:52 on one of the Hoyas' six extra-man chances. Towson's potent offense, which has now surpassed double digits in each of the first two games this season, went to work as Drenner took the ball off the end line for a restart and scored a back-handed goal. Joe Seider ended the first quarter with a marker with just 47 seconds left in the stanza. Drenner hitting an open Seider eight yards off the crease. Towson held a 4-1 advantage to end the first goal. Towson picked up right where it left off as Zach Goodrich five-holed Hoya keeper Nick Marrocco on another Woodall faceoff win. Senior midfielder Brian Bolewicki continued the Tiger run with a snipe at 13:53 on another Drenner assist. Goodrich capped the five-goal run 15 seconds later to give Towson a 7-1 lead. But the Hoyas started a run of their own on back-to-back Bucaro goals, followed by a Jake Carraway strike. Bucaro ended the run at 6:53 with his fourth. Seider and Jon Mazza notched a trio of goals. The former drilled back-to-back goals, followed by Mazza's seventh of the year. Drenner hit Mazza with a pass with just seven seconds left in the first half, giving Towson a 10-5 lead. Bucaro opened the second-half scoring with his fifth of the game at the 12:39 mark of the third. Towson junior Cole Robertson hit a top-shelf shot at 6:58, what proved to be the Tigers final goal of the game. The Hoyas ripped off five-straight goals to end the game. Peter Conley scored with 39 seconds left in the third quarter. Bucaro notched his second man-up goal of the game, followed by Eduardo White and Conley just 21 seconds apart. Down the stretch, Tiger goalie Josh Miller made several door-stop saves with less than 90 seconds to play. Behind the Numbers Towson withstood six penalties, including three in the quarter. Woodall went 19-of -24 at the faceoff X, the most faceoff wins in the Shawn Nadelen Era (2012) for a Tiger. He snapped up 13 groundballs, the first time since Ian Mills at Stony Brook on March 17, 2012. Drenner is the second Towson player this season with six points after finishing with two goals and four assists. He joins Mazza, who had six goals last week at Mount St. Mary's. The Tigers improved to 2-0 for a second-straight season, marking the first time since the 1992-94 seasons Towson opens a year with a 2-0 record. Towson out-shot the Hoyas 41-34, marking a second-straight game the Tigers have taken 40 or more shots. Miller made nine stops in goal for the Tigers, while his counterpart stopped 11 Towson efforts. White was the only midfielder for Georgetown to score Saturday afternoon. The Tiger defensive unit forced 12 Hoya turnovers. Towson, however, turned the ball over 21 times.
