The Robert Morris men's lacrosse team was looking to avoid any kind of a letdown coming off a win that drew newfound national attention to the program, and, on the whole, it did on Saturday afternoon. Despite a scoreless fourth quarter, the Colonials (3-2) rode their offense to a 16-11 victory over High Point (0-6) in a wide-open non-conference game that capped a Youth Day doubleheader at Joe Walton Stadium. Robert Morris used the first of its four man-up goals on the day to help build a 10-4 halftime advantage. This was only the sixth time ever the Colonials scored that many in a single contest, and the first time since Feb. 21, 2015 at Detroit. The teams combined for 58 shots on net, and Alex Heger needed to one-up his season-high in saves with 15 to keep the hosts on top, but early efficiency by RMU put the match beyond the reach of the struggling Panthers. It took only twelve seconds and a short pass from Tyson Gibson for rookie attackman Corson Kealey to open the scoring and extend his goal streak to four games. Matt Schmidt found Gibson down the middle, and he converted from ten yards out just 1:09 later for a 2-0 Robert Morris lead. Schmidt answered HPU's first goal with his eighth of the season with 8:15 to play in the first quarter. The redshirt junior attacker, who led RMU with 32 goals last year, paced the Colonials this weekend, racking up four goals and four assists. The Doylestown, Pa. native, already one of eight different Colonials to record eight points in a single game, became only the second in team history to do it twice. He had previously accomplished the feat in another home game, against Wagner, Apr. 8, 2017. Hometown hero Jimmy Perkins, the reigning NEC Player of the Week, assisted on his first goal and would see Schmidt surpass him for the team lead, with 11 to his ten. Kealey would pick up the first of his four helpers 1:08 afterward, as Shane Majewski found a lane and bounced in the first of his two goals off the bench for a 4-1 Robert Morris lead. Adrian Torok-Orban, who entered Saturday with four career goals against High Point, whipped a shot from a sharp angle on the right wing to make it 5-1 on the man advantage. When leading scorer Asher Nolting pulled one back for the Panthers, sophomore Trey Arnold answered with a faceoff win and second goal in as many games in a span of seven seconds. Schmidt got his second from a wide angle on the left side with only 16 seconds left in the half, and Gibson supplied an exclamation point four seconds before the horn, taking a centering pass from Schmidt and finishing from close range. The Colonials put the game out of reach by ripping off six unanswered goals in the third quarter, including five over a stretch of 1:53. It began with Carter Yepsen, the game-winning goal scorer at Penn State, collecting his third of the year from Schmidt with eight minutes to play in the period. RMU built a 12-5 cushion when Schmidt went across the offensive zone to Jake Boudreau, who threw a mid-range shot on target that found the twine. Following the Colonials' faceoff win, Perkins was clobbered from behind after scoring his team's 13th goal, leading to a two-minute penalty that opened the door for special teams. Torok-Orban, from in tight, scored again with 1:27 left in the third. Schmidt added another man-up goal with 52 seconds to spare, completing his hat trick thanks to a textbook passing play capped off by Kealey, and Kealey, again, connected with Schmidt on the close left wing for the final man-up goal to make it 16-5, the biggest RMU lead of the day. Kealey finished with five points (G, 4 A) and Gibson four (2 G, 2 A). Defensively, Arnold excelled by collecting a team-high six ground balls while going 14-for-25 (.560) from the X. Backup keeper Chris Reynolds saw action in the final 3:37 of play, making his first collegiate save. Junior long-stick midfielder Jack Toomb had another strong game, collecting four ground balls and causing two turnovers, while USILA Team of the Week honoree Zachary Bryant contributed two ground balls and also caused a pair of TO's. Next Saturday, Robert Morris visits No. 18/19 Marquette, the westernmost of its 2018 opponents, for the last of its six season-opening non-conference matches. The opening faceoff from Milwaukee is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
