FINAL SCORE (OT): Vermont 13, Furman 12 GREENVILE, S.C. - Sophomore Braiden Davis scored with 3:08 remaining in overtime and Chris Feifs registered his first win as Vermont head coach as the Catamounts pulled out a 13-12 victory over Furman at Paladin Stadium on Thursday evening. RELATED LINKS Box Score Following both teams' respective season openers, UVM is 1-0 while Furman drops to 0-1. The result also marks the first time since 2011 that the Catamounts have emerged victorious in a season lid-lifter. Goalie Jon Kaplan racked up seven saves to preserve the win and his counterpart, Reilly McDermott, registered three stops in the loss. Cam Milligan and Ben French each had four goals on the night, also contributing four and two assists, respectively. Freshman Charlie Erdmann was 12-for-21 on faceoffs in his collegiate debut, leading the team with four groundballs. James Leary had a team-high four caused turnovers. The early stages of the game saw the teams trade goals after nearly six minutes of scoreless action. Following Graham Dabbs' tally for Furman, French logged a pair to put the Catamounts ahead 2-1. French's second goal with 4:20 left in the first quarter culminated a sequence that ran end-to-end. After Dabbs rang the post for the Paladins, Leary hustled upfield to lock in a successful clear for UVM, ultimately gaining the lead when Ben Cox dished to French for the goal. Furman then countered with a six-goal run stretching into the second quarter. Dabbs secured a hat-trick by the 13:48 mark of the stanza, while Lou Yovino contributed two goals to ultimately put Furman up 7-2. However, the Catamounts fought to chip away and soon pulled back within two. Rob Hudson scored twice and French later fed Milligan for a man-up goal. Although the Paladins moved the score to 9-5 with just under five minutes left in the half, Milligan and Dawes Milchling sent Vermont into halftime on a high note with a pair of tallies in the final 60 seconds. Milligan's last-minute goal finished a sequence that once again began with Leary. The senior caused a turnover and scooped the subsequent groundball, sending a long pass to Zack Bucci who received an assist on Milligan's tally. Following a low-scoring third period, Vermont continued to battle and evened the score at 11-apiece when Milligan netted a pair in the fourth quarter, one goal of which converted an EMO. In the final minute, Furman's William Holcomb fired from five yards out to give the Paladins a 12-11 advantage with just 35 seconds on the clock. Vermont controlled the ensuing faceoff, quickly calling timeout. Hudson battled his way out of a double-team following the stoppage, finding Milligan who dished to French on the doorstep for the equalizer. Davis' game-winner was the result of a lucky pass from Milligan while double-teamed. The former then fired home from five yards and sent Vermont into celebration. The Catamounts now face a quick turnaround and head further south to Georgia for a Saturday (Feb. 4) matchup with Mercer. Opening faceoff in that game is set for noon.
