The Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team led Thursday night’s Big Ten semifinal game against Ohio State for exactly 11.3 seconds, but it was the right 11.3 for the Blue Jays who got an unassisted goal from junior Alex Concannon to break a 5-5 tie with just the 11.3 ticks remaining to score a 6-5 win over the Buckeyes. Hopkins advances to Saturday night’s Big Ten Championship game, where they will meet top-seeded Maryland, which knocked off fourth-seeded Rutgers, 12-9, in the other semifinal. Johns Hopkins (10-4) trailed by two on three different occasions and fell behind 5-4 on a Jackson Reid goal with 11 minutes remaining, but an extra-man strike from junior Kyle Marr with 7:52 to play to pulled the Blue Jays even. That’s when an already intense game got even crazier. Senior Brock Turnbaugh, who had made two saves with Ohio State up two men and the Blue Jays down 5-4, stopped a step-down by Ohio State’s Tre Leclaire with just over six minutes remaining. After the teams traded turnovers, the Blue Jays took possession with 1:51 to play and worked for the game-winner, but eventually turned the ball over with 32.1 seconds remaining on the shot clock violation. A failed clear by Ohio State later and the Blue Jays called timeout with 22.9 seconds on the clock. Out of the timeout, senior Joel Tinney’s skip pass to the backside was deflected twice, the second of which Concannon caught in stride in the slot and fired home what proved to be the game-winner. Turnbaugh, who posted 11 second-half saves while allowing just one second-half goal, stopped a Jack Jasinski 20-yard shot as time expired to seal the win. Ohio State had led 2-0 after 17 minutes as Leclaire and Jasinski struck for unassisted goals before Marr got the Blue Jays on the board with 11:53 left in the second quarter. The teams would trade the four goals in the final 8:53 of the half with Jackson and Jeff Henrick strikes for Ohio State answered by Tinney goals for the Blue Jays; the second Tinney goal with 21 seconds left in the first half accounted for a 4-3 halftime score in favor of OSU. Turnbaugh turned away four Ohio State shots in the third quarter and Marr’s second of the game with 3:14 left in the period off a quick feed from Tinney to the crease accounted for a 4-4 score at the end of period That score held until Jackson’s goal four minutes into the final period set the stage for Marr’s equalizer and Concannon’s late-game heroics, which sends Johns Hopkins into its second Big Ten championship game. Turnbaugh finished with a career-high-tying 16 saves and Marr (3g), Tinney (2g, 1a), Concannon (1g, 1a) and senior Shack Stanwick (2a) finished with multi-point games for the Blue Jays. Ohio State (8-7) got two goals from Reid, one goal and one assists from Leclaire and an 11-of-14 performance on faceoffs from Justin Inacio, but Turnbaugh’s 16 saves kept the game close until Concannon gave the Blue Jays the only lead they would need to advance.
