The winds were howling at Reese Stadium tonight during a matchup of national ranked teams hoping to keep win streaks alive. The No. 3 Yale Men's Lacrosse Team's 7-game win streak blew away with a 9-8 overtime loss to No. 14 Bucknell, which has now won 3 straight.
Sean O'Brien scored with 1:02 left in the extra session to give the Bison a win they nearly let slip out of their hands. The Patriot League leaders were up 3-1, 7-4 and 8-5 before three different Bulldog comebacks.
The loss spoiled an excellent offensive showing by senior attackman Ben Reeves, who led Yale with 2 goals and 5 points while showing off his ability distribute the ball in impressive ways. The Blue also got a pair of tallies from Jackson Morrill, but too many (13) costly turnovers prevented these efforts from leading to Yale's first comeback win.
The Elis, who had a 4-3 advantage at the half, erased the final 3-goal deficit with three straight goals, the last of which came with 1:38 left in the fourth on a great Reeves move while backing into a defender.
The Bulldogs (7-2) had a pair of golden opportunities to win the game after the fantastic comeback. Bucknell goalie Christian Klipstein made a save on a Brendan Rooney shot from close range with under a minute left in the fourth, and then Yale, after winning the faceoff and getting a shot on target that was saved while drawing a penalty, turned the ball over with an extra man that led to the game-winning goal.
It was a cruel irony that a failed EMO led to the deciding tally. The Bulldog special teams played well enough to convert 3 of 4 EMOs up to that point, and it looked like a fourth and final man-up goal was about to happen before the untimely misconnection on a pass.
The Bison (8-3) did a good job of making Conor Mackie, Yale's standout FOGO, work for his faceoff wins. The Yale senior won 13 of 19 overall with 9 ground balls, but the visitors took advantage of their possession time, limiting Yale's shots to just 30 while taking time off the clock whenever possible.
Jack Starr, a Yale rookie who saw 34 shots, made 9 saves and came close to helping his team pull this one out.
