The anticipated shootout between two of the top scoring teams in the country turned out to be a pitchers' duel. Despite a strong defensive effort, Brown's offense sputtered in a 7-4 loss to #9 Cornell in the semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament at Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium. Cornell advances to Sunday's Championship game against #1 Yale with game a 12 noon start on ESPNU at Wien Stadium. Goalies from both teams turned in incredible performances – Brown's Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made 14 saves, and Cornell's Christian Knight registered 19 saves. The Bears, who gave up 19 goals to the Big Red in the first meeting two weeks ago, out-shot the Big Red by a 42-32 margin and had a 9-5 advantage in face-offs. Ted Ottens (Wilton, CT) won 5-of-10 face-offs and Jason Simaan (Newport Beach, CA) captured 4-of-4 face-offs for the Bears. A fast paced, but low scoring opening quarter, had the Big Red leading by a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Clarke Petterson with 2:13 left in the quarter. After falling behind 2-0, Brown freshman George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) got the Bears on the scoreboard on a pass from junior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) with 7:39 left in the half to trail, 2-1. A goal by Cornell's John Piatelli with 1:54 left gave the Big Red a 3-1 lead at the half. Cornell extended its lead to 5-1 before freshman Riley Stewart (Darien, CT) intercepted a clearing pass and scored an unassisted goal for the bears to trail, 5-2, with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Bears' senior attackman Carson Song (Charlotte, NC) scored an extra man goal to open the fourth quarter and sophomore Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) cut Cornell's lead to 5-4 with 6:15 remaining in the game.
