The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team found itself in a position where a win over Yale in Friday night's Ivy League Tournament semifinal might catapult the Quakers into position for an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship field. Boy, did the Bulldogs dash those dreams. Yale—which entered this weekend not just as the Tournament's top seed but as the No. 1-ranked team in both national polls—scored the game's first five goals at Columbia's Wien Stadium. Penn was able to make three of them up bridging the first and second quarters to get within 5-3, but it was all Bulldogs after that as they scored 16 of the game's next 17 goals en route to a 21-6 victory. With the loss, Penn's season ends at 7-8 overall as the Quakers cannot be selected for an NCAA bid due to their losing record. Yale improves to 13-2 overall and will play either Cornell or Brown in Sunday's noon final. This is the third straight year Penn's season has been ended by Yale in the Ivy League Tournament. Unlike the previous two years, where the margin was just one goal—including a 13-12, four-overtime classic last year in New Haven—this game was devoid of drama. Heading into the game, Penn head coach Mike Murphy pointed to face-offs as a key. With that in mind, he will be happy to see that the Quakers won 14 of the 30 draws, nearly 50 percent. The rest of the stat sheet? Forgettable. Yale outshot Penn, 56-27, including a staggering 37-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had 41 ground balls to the Quakers' 22. Penn gave Yale seven man-up opportunities, and Eli converted four of them. In a lot of ways, Penn was its own worst enemy on Friday, especially early. Yale's first four goals, and six of its first eight, came directly off Quakers turnovers. The top-ranked team is going to punish you when you turn it over, and the Bulldogs did that in spades. Ironically, Penn's first goal came late on a man-down situation late in the first quarter, Reed Junkin making a save at one end and Simon Mathias finishing off an Adam Goldner feed at the other end to complete the Quakers' counterattack and make the score 5-1. The goal extended Mathias' goal-scoring and point-scoring streaks to 20 and 43, respectively. That sequence seemed to light a fire under the Quakers, and they made it 5-2 in short order as Goldner rifled home a shot up top from Tyler Dunn. It was 5-3 early in the second when Mathias notched his second of the night, unassisted. That ended up being as good as it got for Penn. Yale scored four goals in a span of 3:12 to make it 9-3 midway through the period, then added a tenth just 1:32 after that. Penn got one of those back on an unassisted Dunn goal, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the final minute of the half and took a 13-4 lead into the break. A new half did not change Penn's fortunes. Yale had all three goals in the third quarter to make it 16-4, then piled on five more in the fourth—the cap on a staggering 11-goal run—that pushed the score to 21-4. Penn finally ended a scoring drought of 32:57 when Goldner scored in a man-up situation off a Kevin McGeary feed, and then senior Kyle Scheetz gave the Penn fans a thrill with his first collegiate goal in the waning seconds. Reed Junkin was in the goal for most of Friday night's game and he had all 16 of Penn's saves. Preston Heard mopped up in the final four minutes and allowed one goal without making a stop.
