In a back-and-forth nonconference game, the Towson University men's lacrosse team fell 12-10 on Saturday afternoon against visiting Georgetown University. Towson (1-2) was led by a pair of hat tricks from junior Jon Mazza and rookie Phil Wies, the first of the latter's career. Georgetown (3-0) got a six-point, four-goal, two-assist effort from Daniel Bucaro. Jake Carraway, Lucas Wittenberg and Craig Berge finished with two goals apiece. How it Happened Towson, which was ranked 19th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, found itself in a 3-1 hole early in the first quarter. Wittenberg scored the game's first goal before Wies answered to make it 1-1. The Hoyas, which received votes in both major polls this week, got back-to-back goals from Carraway and Berge. Austin McDonald assisted on the Berge goal at 8:16 of the first quarter. Towson rallied for a four-goal run over the final five and a half minutes of the frame. Wies and Timmy Monahan scored 90 seconds apart before WIes got his third of the day at 2:12 of the first quarter. Grant Maloof finished the run with 57 seconds left to give Towson a 5-3 edge through 15 minutes. Georgetown came out in the second quarter and reeled off five-straight goals, including a natural hat trick from Bucaro over the first six minutes of the quarter. Defenseman Stephen MacLeod assisted on the first goal with a long-range feed from the defensive end. Greg Galligan and Robert Clark struck twice in a 90 second span, with Bucaro feeding Galligan and Massimo Bucci hitting Clark with an assist. Down 8-5, the Tigers roared back to finish the half with back-to-back goals from Brendan Sunday and Mazza at 2:05 and 1:33, respectively, cutting the Hoyas' lead to 8-7. Towson extended its run to three unanswered just over a minute into the fresh half as Mazza scored his second, making it an 8-8 affair. Wittenberg scored the only Hoya tally of the third quarter on a Bucaro feed, taking a 9-8 lead with 8:12 to play. But Mazza answered back with his second-straight hat trick at 7:02 to deadlock the game at 9-9. Neither team scored over the final seven minutes of the third. Georgetown out-scored the Tigers 3-1 in the final 15 minutes, getting a tally from Berge before an extra-man goal from Carraway put the Hoyas up 11-9. Monahan scored with 7:20 to play in the game, cutting the Georgetown lead back down to one, 11-10, but Bucaro put the nail in the Tigers' coffin with 3:09 to play. Towson called timeout with 90 seconds to play, but a costly sailed pass was the last meaningful Tiger possession of the game. Behind the Numbers Junior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall won 17 of his 25 faceoffs, his third-straight game with at least 16 wins. He added another 13 ground balls to his stat line as well. Woodall has won 36 of his 49 faceoffs (73.5 percent) against Georgetown in the last two seasons while picking up 26 total ground balls. Wies had the first hat trick of his young Tiger career, scoring on four total shots. Mazza logged his second hat trick in as many games while racking the fourth of his career. Turnovers hurt the Tigers, who finished with 16, including 10 in the second half. Georgetown has 10 total, with five coming in the third quarter. The Tigers cleared a perfect 17-for-17 while Georgetown had just one failed clear. The Hoyas had a narrow 27-26 edge on faceoff. Woodall accounted for half of the Tigers' loose balls. Senior keeper Josh Miller made a dozen saves for the Tigers, resetting his career high. Nick Marrocco had eight saves at the other end of the field, stopping two shots in every quarter. Up Next For Towson The Tigers play two games next week, heading down the road to Loyola on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Towson returns to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday, March 3 for a noon clash against crosstown rival UMBC. Those two games round out Towson's slate against in-state foes.
