MILWAUKEE - John Wagner scored his third game winner of the season 35 seconds into overtime as the Marquette University men's lacrosse team claimed its BIG EAST Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields over No. 16/18 Georgetown, 9/8. Wagner, who did not practice the last two days due to illness, posted four goals including the game winner on a dodge down the right side. His other game winners this season came in the season opener against Jacksonville with under 10 seconds remaining and in overtime against then-No. 4/6 Ohio State on March 2. The possession on which the game winner was scored came courtesy of junior long-stick midfielder Noah Richard off the opening faceoff of overtime. Just as the Hoyas appeared to have gained possession, Richard dove toward the restraining line to jar the ball free and into the stick of Wagner. Marquette head coach Joe Amplo then called timeout to set up the final play. Richard picked up a total of five ground balls on the afternoon and assisted Luke Anderson's first period goal. Senior goalie Cole Blazer proved to be the difference for the Golden Eagles (4-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) with a season-high 15 saves, including a big stop late in the fourth as MU rallied from an 8-7 deficit. Daniel Bucaro scored five times to lead Georgetown (6-2, 0-1 BIG EAST), which outshot Marquette. 36-33. Marquette got off to a hot start, racking up four first quarter goals and shot out to a 6-2 lead before Georgetown went on a 4-0 run to tie it up at 6 going into the half. From there, the game became a back-and-forth defensive battle and the Hoyas gained their first lead of the game to open the fourth quarter, 8-7. The Golden Eagles answered back with a McClelland goal to knot the score at 8 with just under seven minutes to play. Neither team found the back of the net to close regulation, leading to sudden death overtime. Marquette now has an all-time record of 19-7 in one-goal games and is 2-1 in overtime this season. MU now leads the series against the Hoyas 4-3 and all four MU victories have come by just one goal. The Golden Eagles will play host to another ranked team in No. 7/8 Villanova on Saturday, March 31 at Valley Fields at 11 a.m. CT.
