WASHINGTON D.C. – Senior faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) moved into second in career faceoff wins in NCAA Division I history, and the [3/3] University of Denver men’s lacrosse defense matched its season low output of the year, holding [RV/RV] Georgetown to five in a 6-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. “First of all, all the credit in the world to Coach [Kevin] Warne, his staff and his players,” head coach Bill Tierney said. “They took it to us. Their goalie was fabulous and they battled for 60 minutes. It was a great defensive lacrosse game with two goalies that both played well. Our guys found a way to win a slow game today, our defense played well and Trevor was of course great facing off and got a big goal to start the fourth quarter for us. In the end though, credit to Georgetown with the way they came out to play today. We haven’t had a close one with them in a while, and you could tell their kids wanted it.” Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) led the Pioneers with two goals and an assist. Classmate Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and junior Dylan Johnson (Englewood, Colo.) led the Denver defense statistically with two caused turnovers. Sophomore Josh Matte (Issaquah, Wash.) saved 7-of-12 shots on goal in his third career start. Denver was held to just a goal from junior Austin French (Danville, Calif.) in the opening 15 minutes and went into the second quarter trailing 2-1 after a pair of goals from Craig Berge. For the second-consecutive week the Pioneers were held to just one goal in the first half, this time entering the intermission trailing 3-1. Jake Carraway finished a broken up pass from Craig Berge for his 24th goal of the season to put up the only tally of the second quarter. In the third quarter, the Pioneers and Hoyas split the four goals two apiece to give Georgetown a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Walker started the scoring in the frame with his 29th goal of the season with 13:02 to play to make it 3-2, but Craig Berge completed his hat trick to answer Walker’s goal a little over four minutes later to make it 4-2. Walker came around from X to score his second of the day to cut the Hoyas lead to one once again, but Georgetown had the answer to make it 5-3. The Pioneers scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter to complete its second-straight come-from-behind win, and its first win with a two-goal deficit in the fourth-quarter since March 7, 2015 when they trailed by three against No. 3 Notre Dame. Baptiste got his fifth goal in three games off the opening draw of the fourth quarter, senior Joe Reid (Petaluma, Calif.) netted his third goal of the campaign and last week’s overtime hero Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored his second-straight game-winning goal with 7:20 to go to send the Pioneers to 22-0 in BIG EAST regular season play. Denver’s offensive goal total was its lowest since March 1, 2008, a 9-6 loss at UMBC, and its lowest goal total in a win since defeating [RV] Brown 6-4 on March 4, 2000 at the Mile High City. UP NEXT: The [3/3] University of Denver men’s lacrosse team, Presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, will continue its BIG EAST road swing next Saturday as the Pioneers head to [8/8] Villanova. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. ET/12 p.m. MT on the BIG EAST Digital Network and ESPN Denver 1600.
