Louisville, Ky. (March 11, 2017) – The Mount St. Mary's University men's lacrosse team rolled to an 18-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Bellarmine to collect its first win of the 2017 campaign. A balanced attack led the Mount to victory as 11 different players recorded at least one goal in the tilt, led by Chris DiPretoro, who tallied six points on four goals and two assists. Jack Mangan and Brenden McCarthy added four points (2g, 2a) apiece, while Bubba Johnson and Joe Bethke chipped in with a pair of goals each. Bethke and Matt Haggerty both registered the first goals of their collegiate careers in the contest. Tucker Ciessau (2g, 1a) and Andrew Schoeneck (3a) paced Bellarmine with three points each, while Jack Perkins added a pair of goals. Matt Vierheller collected the win in goal for the Mount, making nine saves and posting a .563 save percentage. Max Cartor took the loss for the Knights despite a 12-save effort. After an even first period that saw the Mount and Bellarmine tied at 3-3, the Mountaineers took control of the contest in the second, outscoring the Knights by a 5-1 margin. Spencer Smith got the scoring started just under two minutes into the period on a man-up opportunity, and Haggerty and Mangan followed with consecutive goals to make it 6-3 Mountaineers at the 8:02 mark. Following an Ian Miller goal for BU, the Mount closed the half with the final two scores as McCarthy and DiPretoro found the back of the net to pad the team's lead to 8-4 at halftime. Mount St. Mary's netted the first three tallies of the third quarter, including a pair from DiPretoro as he rounded out his hat trick, pushing the Mount's advantage to 11-4 with 9:58 remaining in the frame. Perkins broke up the Mount's stretch of three straight minutes later, but Bethke netted his second of the contest in the final minutes of the quarter, sending the Mountaineers into the fourth with a 12-5 advantage. Six different Mountaineers scored in the final period as the Mount outscored Bellarmine by a 6-2 margin to close out the 18-7 victory. The Mount held a 40-34 shot advantage in the contest and won 16-of-26 faceoffs, paced by a 15-for-25 mark in the X from Shawn Raum.
