UMBC rallied from a 7-3 fourth-quarter deficit, but could not complete the comeback and fell, 7-6, to Stony Brook, in the America East opener for both teams at UMBC Stadium. Both teams are now 2-5 on the campaign. Junior midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) led all scorers with four points on three goals and an assist. The Retrievers trailed, 7-3, after 45 minutes, but erupted for three scores in less than five minutes to get right back into the game. Nolan scored on a man-up goal on a feed from classmate Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) at the 2:14 mark, and after the Retrievers won the ensuing face-off, Nolan would get a helper on freshman Michael Zichelli's (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) score just 47 seconds later. Moments later, UMBC could not convert with two men up, but shortly thereafter forced a Seawolf turnover and freshman Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) banged home a feed from Andrews to bring the hosts to within a goal with 10:03 remaining. After winning the game's final draw, UMBC attempted four shots, but could not knot the score. The Retrievers had to kill off a late penalty as junior netminder David Pisanic (Towson, Md./Boys Latin) made a critical save with 1:13 remaining. UMBC cleared successfully and called time out with 22 seconds left, but lost control of the ball and never got an attempt in the final seconds. UMBC dominated the stat sheet, outshooting SBU, 37-22, and capturing 12 of 17 draws. Steven Zichelli (1g, 1a) and Andrews (2 assists) also scored multiple points for UMBC. Sophomore face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) won 8-of-13 draws, while senior long-stick defensive midfielder Billy O'Hara (Davidsonville, Md./South River) continued to wreak havoc, causing three of Stony Brook's 10 turnovers. Jack Walsh and Wayne White scored two goals each for the Seawolves. In the nets, Pisanic got his first start since the season opener and finished with five saves. SBU netminder Michael Bollinger stopped seven shots for the visitors. UMBC started sluggishly, committing six miscues on their first eight possessions and Stony Brook took a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Retrievers would not get on the board until 6:50 remained in the first half, as Nolan netted his first of the day and he recorded a man-up score to knot the game at 2-2 with 3:42 to play in the period. But the game's only tie was short-lived as Stony Brook won the face-off and took the lead for good on a goal by Tyler Anderson 30 seconds after the Retriever marker. White added a man-up goal with 38 seconds to play in the half and the Seawolves took a 4-2 lead into the break. Sophomore attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) cut the deficit to 4-3 just 1:33 into the half, but again, the Seawolves got the face-off and re-took a two-goal lead 11 seconds later. SBU extended the margin to 7-3 by the end of the third and held on for the hard-earned victory. Both squads scored on 2-of-3 man-up chances in the game. The Retrievers play their final non-conference game of the season next Saturday, March 24, when the Michigan Wolverines make their first ever appearance at UMBC Stadium. Start time for the contest is 3:00 p.m.
