– The No. 8 Big Red men's lacrosse team scored twice in the first 54 seconds of the game and never looked back as it rolled to a 19-5 Senior Day victory over Brown this afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Cornell jumped out to an 11-0 lead, holding the Bears scoreless for the first 25:59 of the contest, to improve to 10-3 overall (4-1 Ivy) and secure the second overall seed in the 2018 Men's Lacrosse Ivy League Tournament, to be held May 4-6 in New York City. Jeff Teat led all scorers with 10 points on two goals and eight assists. His eight assists tie a career-high, while his 10 points give him double-digit points for the fifth time in his career, matching Mike French '76 for the most 10-point games in Cornell history. French was on hand to see this mark tied, as he and members of the 1976, 1977 and 1978 teams returned to campus this weekend to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their NCAA-record 42-game win streak. Altogether, 11 different Big Red got into the scoring column, with Colton Rupp, Jake McCulloch, and Jordan Dowiak finishing with a hat trick. Rupp also added two assists, while McCulloch and Dowiak added one helper apiece. Clarke Petterson (two goals, one assist) and John Piatelli one goal, one assist) where the only other multi-point scorers for Cornell. Brown had ample opportunity to score, winning 17-of-26 face-offs, with Ted Ottens going 16-of-25 with nine ground balls, but Cornell's defense was impressive, causing 10 of the Bears' 20 turnovers, with Dom Doria and Ryan Bray causing two apiece. The Big Red defensive unit also limited the Bears to just 15 shots on goal and only Ryan Aughavin (two goals) finished with more than one point for the visitors. Christian Knight looked sharp in his return to the starting line-up, as he made eight saves and allowed just four goals in 45 minutes of action before giving way to Caelahn Bullen, who saved two and allowed one goal in the final quarter. Cornell held the edge in shots (47-33), ground balls (36-30), and turned the ball over 14 times fewer than the Bears (20-6). The Big Red cleared the ball successfully on 19-of-20 attempts, while Brown went 14-of-16. Neither team scored a man-up goal with Brown going 0-of-2, including a failure to score on a two-man advantage, while the Big Red went 0-of-1. Bears' goalie Phil Goss finished with 15 saves. NOTES TO KNOW • With its 10-3 record, Cornell's 2018 performance is the fifth best single-season win total improvement in men's lacrosse history, matching the 14-4 2013 team which posted five more victories than the 9-4 2012 team. • The win snapped the Bears' three-game winning streak in the series. • The 14 goals in the win is Cornell's largest margin of victory over Brown since 1970 (20-6). • The 19 goals scored by Cornell is the most scored by the Big Red in the series since 1978 (19-7). • Cornell has seven straight wins for the first time since the 2014 squad opened the season with nine consecutive victories. • Teat's eight assists are good for fourth in Cornell history for assists in a single game. • Teat's 10 points are good for 12th in Big Red history for points in a single game. • With his eight assists, Teat moved into fifth place in Cornell history for assists in a single season (52). • With his 10 points, Teat moved into ninth place in Cornell history for points in a single season (87). UP NEXT The Big Red will play its regular season finale when it travels to Princeton to take on the Tigers on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
