Joe Rodrigues scored six goals to lead 11 different players that contributed a point for Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse on Saturday afternoon against Penn State. However, the offensive slugfest on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium went to the visiting Nittany Lions by a final count of 17-13. With the loss, the Stags fall to 2-6 on the season. Penn State, which is currently unranked but receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, improves to 5-3. "We just need to play better and harder, and we need to commit to improving," said Head Coach Andy Copelan. "We understand that this is all still fixable going forward, but we have work to do." With his six goals, Rodrigues established a new personal career high. He was one marker short of the Fairfield Lacrosse record of seven goals established by Spencer Steele in 1999 against Saint Joseph's and matched by Rob Scipioni against Vermont in 2000. The senior attackman currently leads the Stags with 19 goals and 21 total points this spring. Also on the attack, Jack Brennan netted his second career hat trick fueled by two man-up goals. Brennan leads the CAA and is among the nation's best on the EMO with six man-up goals this season. Colin Burke added two goals for the Stags, with Taylor Strough and McKay Sheahan each netting one. Kendall Keahey dished out the first two assists of his career this afternoon, with one helper apiece coming from the crosses of Brennan, Burke, Strough, Dylan Beckwith, Travis Ford, Charlie Horning, Drew Murray and Bill McMenamin. In addition to his first career assist, McMenamin recorded four faceoff wins and collected one ground ball in his Fairfield debut. Also at the X, Will Fox won 12 draws and gathered a pair of ground balls. Two of Samuel Murphy's three ground balls came from the wing on faceoff situations. Sean McKee went the distance in the cage and made seven saves with four ground balls. In front of McKee, Murphy and J.B. Smith each caused a pair of turnovers. Smith also gathered three ground balls. Penn State, an NCAA postseason qualifier out of the Big Ten last season, was led by six goals and two assists from Mac O'Keefe. Fellow attackman Dylan Foulds scored four goals with three helpers. Gerard Arceri set the tone for the Nittany Lions at the faceoff X with a 20-for-25 day and 17 ground balls. Colby Kneese made three saves in the first 48 minutes in the cage, with Will Schreiner and Trevor Scollins splitting the final 12 minutes to complete the effort. "Penn State was in control of time of possession, give them credit for that," added Copelan. "Arceri at the X is a game-changer, and he certainly impacted today's game." The Stags conclude their six-game residency at Raffery Stadium – the longest homestand in program history – this Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. with a visit from NJIT.
