For the second consecutive game, the Irish attack was on fire to start the contest. Notre Dame struck four times in the opening five minutes to quickly build a 4-0 lead. Byrne struck first followed by two goals from Wynne within the first four minutes. Costabile got in on the action less than a minute later, ripping a shot past the Cavaliers' keeper to put an exclamation mark on the early goal flurry.

Virginia regrouped and answered with four straight goals of its own, all coming from attackman Michael Kraus to level the score at 4-4 with 11 minutes to go in the second quarter.

Notre Dame finished the second stanza strong, as Gleason and Costabile both found the back of the net to give the Irish a 6-4 lead after the opening 30 minutes of play.

The Irish showed their resiliency in the fourth frame, outscoring the Cavaliers 3-0 to earn the victory. Wynne leveled the contest less than a minute into the fourth quarter before putting the Irish back on top with a finish in front of the crease off a perfect pass from Ryder Garnsey.

The Notre Dame defense dug in during the final 10 minutes of play and received two huge caused turnovers from Sexton in the final minute to secure the 9-7 victory.
