The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team scored four goals in the final 1:37 of regulation before emerging with a 12-11 victory over Providence on John Wagner’s fifth game winner of the season just 14 seconds into overtime. The Golden Eagles (6-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) used six fourth quarter goals to rally, capped by Griffin Fleming’s game-tying tally as time expired in regulation. The Friars (4-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) won the final face-off of regulation and attempted to kill the remaining seconds before freshman midfielder Evan McGreen flung the ball into the air towards the middle of the box. Marquette SSDM Luke Anderson grabbed the ball and quickly got it downfield to Fleming for the score. Wagner, who has posted four overtime winners this season, scored three goals in the last two minutes of play after MU trailed 11-7 on Kevin McCordic’s goal with 2:26 left in the fourth quarter. Seniors Zachary Melillo, Colin Riehl and Cole Blazer all had big days in the final regular season game of their Marquette careers at Valley Fields. Melillo continued his hot play of late by going 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) at the face-off dot and was helped on the wing by Riehl, who notched five ground balls and a caused a pair of PC turnovers. Blazer made eight saves in his sixth victory of the season. The Golden Eagles own the all-time series 5-1 against the Friars and split the two meetings last season in Providence. PC claimed its first victory over Marquette, 9-7, during the regular season on April 15, 2017, while MU won the rematch, 10-9, in the championship game of the BIG EAST tournament. Marquette returns to action on Friday, April 20 at No. 3/5 Duke before closing the regular season at No. 2/3 Denver on April 28.
