Alex Bassil, Carolina's fourth string goalkeeper to start the season, made a career high 14 saves and stopped a shot by Notre Dame's Bryan Costabile with 10 seconds left as North Carolina recorded an emotional 10-9 win over 14th-ranked Notre Dame in men's lacrosse action on Senior Day at Kenan Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was the final home game for 13 Tar Heel seniors and a crowd of 2,908 was on hand to watch the Tar Heels pull off a victory in a back-and-forth game against the Fighting Irish. North Carolina broke a seven-game losing streak, winning for the first time since March 3 when the Tar Heels beat St. John's 9-8 at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels finished the regular season at 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the ACC. Notre Dame fell to 6-5 overall with the loss and 1-3 in the conference. Carolina was led offensively by junior attackman Andy Matthews who had a team-high four points on a goal and three assists. Sophomore midfielder Tanner Cook had two goals and an assist for Carolina while senior attackman Chris Cloutier and freshman midfielder Alex Trippi each scored twice for UNC. The Fighting Irish were led offensively by Bryan Costabile who had a hat trick while Ryder Garnsey had two goals for Notre Dame. Statistically the game tilted in the direction of Notre Dame which outshot the Tar Heels 41-30 and won the ground ball battle 33-25. The Fighting Irish dominated the X, winning 17 of 22 face-offs. John Travisano won 16 of 21 face-offs for Notre Dame and had a game high nine ground balls. But in other statistical areas, UNC had the advantage. Bassil, a junior who attended Durham Academy, made his sixth straight start and recorded 14 saves. His previous career high had been 10 against Maryland on March 24. Bassil started the season as the fourth string goalkeeper but due to injuries and other issues he had earned the starting job by late March. Notre Dame ended with a 23-17 edge in shots on goal. Matt Schmidt made seven saves while going all 60 minutes in goal for Notre Dame. UNC committed just 10 turnovers compared to 15 for Notre Dame. The Tar Heels came into the game ranked third in the country in fewest turnovers per game at 10.69 and their ability to take care of the ball was a key issue in the game Saturday. Notre Dame committed 12 of its 15 turnovers in the second half. In the clearing game, Notre Dame was perfect at 17 for 17 while UNC was successful 16 of 18 times. Another key in the game was the performance of the man-up and man-down units. UNC scored on two of its three EMO chances while its man-down defense limited the Fighting Irish to two extra-man goals in eight chances. Senior William McBride, playing his last game at home, did yeoman's work all day for UNC, leading the team with a career high seven ground balls and matching his career high for caused turnovers with three. Close defense starters Michael Nathan and Jack Rowlett each had three ground balls for UNC. The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first half, being tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3. William Perry gave the Tar Heels a 4-3 lead with a man-up goal with 6:52 left in the first half before Tanner Cook tallied his second goal of the game with 4:34 left in the half to put the Tar Heels up 5-3, which would prove to be their biggest lead of the game. Notre Dame took its first lead of the game with the contest's next three goals. Pierre Byrne's goal off an assist by Brendan Gleason staked Notre Dame to a 6-5 lead with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Carolina answered with a pair of goals in less than a minute to take a 7-6 lead heading into the final period. Junior Cole Haverty scored his first goal since his freshman year off an Andy Matthews assist with 31 seconds left in the period. Just 13 seconds later, Matthews intercepted a pass off a Notre Dame face-off win and tallied his eighth goal of the season to put UNC up by one. Mikey Wynne equalized for Notre Dame with 11:05 to play in the fourth quarter but Alex Trippi answered for Carolina just 44 seconds later to put Carolina up 8-7. Notre Dame retook the lead with a pair of goals just a minute apart. Bryan Costabile scored a man-up goal with 9:39 left in the game to even things and then Thomas McNamara scored just his second goal of the year 1:14 later to put Notre Dame up 9-8. The Tar Heels rallied to win 10-9 off a pair of goals off the stick off of senior attackman Chris Cloutier. The Canadian scored off an assist by Tanner Cook with 4:31 to play. After the goal, Notre Dame's Carlson Milikin was sent off for a minute for a cross check and Carolina took advantage to score on the extra-man opportunity. William Perry fed Cloutier with 3:53 to play for the eventual game-winning tally. Over the final three minutes, UNC weathered a man-up opportunity for Notre Dame and then a turnover by Mikey Wynne gave UNC the ball back with 1:30 to play. Notre Dame was able to regain possession by Costabile's shot was saved by Bassil with 10 seconds to play and the Tar Heels got to celebrate a Senior Day win. NOTES: North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia all finished 1-3 in the ACC but UNC lost the goals allowed tiebreaker (amongst the three teams) and did not qualify for the ACC Tournament. Alex Bassil set a career high for saves in a game with 14. His previous career high was 10 against Maryland on March 24, 2018. William McBride had a career high seven ground balls in the game. His previous career high was four on three occasions. He matched his career high for caused turnovers in a game with three.
