THE BASICS: RESULT: Binghamton 14, Hartford 10 RECORDS: Hartford (3-7, 0-3 AE); Binghamton (4-8, 1-2 AE) LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.) PHOTO GALLERY THE LEAD: A big second quarter proved to be the deciding factor in the game, as Binghamton took a 14-10 decision from the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team on Saturday in West Hartford. The Bearcats outscored the Hawks, 5-1, in the decisive second stanza to break open a 3-3 tie and take the lead for good. Sean Gilroy scored a game-best six goals for the Bearcats, who also received a hat trick from Thomas McAndrew. Senior Justin Huggins paced the Hawks with four goals, while classmate Griffin Feiner and junior Dylan Jinks rounded out the scoring with three goals apiece. HOW IT HAPPENED: Netting three goals in a four-minute stretch, the Hawks erased Binghamton's early advantage and took a 3-1 lead with 9:15 remaining in the opening stanza. The lead was short-lived though, as Gilroy, who opened the game with a goal 36 seconds in, struck two more times in the quarter to pull the Bearcats out of the deficit and tie up the game at 3-3 with 5:08 remaining. The Hawks would end a 12-minute scoring drought by both teams and take the lead on an unassisted score from Jinks with 7:51 remaining in the half, but the Bearcats rallied for five unanswered goals over the final 7:14 to take a four-goal advantage at the break. McAndrew's second goal of the run with five seconds left in the half capped Binghamton's run and provided the halftime score of 8-4. The Hawks slashed their deficit in half in the opening part of the third on a pair of goals from Jinks, but Binghamton responded with a 3-0 run to open up an 11-6 lead with 5:29 left in the quarter. The Hawks managed to pull within three behind back-to-back Huggins' goals early in the fourth, but Binghamton held off the comeback bid by outscoring Hartford, 3-2, over the final 11:19 to seal the win. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES: Feiner tacked on two assists to finish with a team-high five points. He improved his career goal total to 121 and is now ranked fourth all-time in program history in the category. Binghamton, which committed just 10 turnovers on the afternoon, outshot Hartford by a 42-36 margin. Behind an 18-of-26 effort from senior Dylan Protesto, the Hawks held an 18-of-28 advantage at the X. The ground ball battle was split down the middle with 31 wins by each team. Protesto's eight loose balls were a game high. Kevin Carbone came away with 11 saves for the Bearcats. Taking over the goaltending duties for Hartford's Ryan Vanderford in the second half, freshman Nicholas Ferraro made six stops. NEXT ON TAP: Hartford hits the road for its next two games, beginning with an evening tilt at UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 14. Opening faceoff from Cushing Field is slated for 7:30 p.m.
