JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the first time since 2011, Jacksonville University men's lacrosse has come away victorious against Air Force, as the Dolphins battled through a lightning delay and a late rally to down the Falcons, 13-12, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field. Now 5-5 on the year, and 3-1 in the SoCon, this season marks the most wins in five years for the Dolphins. The 2013 squad finished the season 8-5 overall and remains the only team in the program's nine year history to earn a regular season conference title. The win over Air Force (4-8, 2-2 SoCon) also snaps a seven-year long drought against the Falcons. "Today was an important moment for the Jacksonville men's lacrosse program. While we tried to give it away at the end, we found a way to win against a high quality opponent," stated head coach John Galloway, now in his second season leading the Dolphins. "In my time here, we have struggled to find a way to come back late in games. Our seniors made plays in crucial moments that gave us the momentum in the second half. Hunter Forbes was absolutely terrific, not only at the faceoff game, but off the ground in traffic." Forbes continued his dominating ways at the face off X, as the senior won 19-of-28 and picked up 13 ground balls to become the first player in program history to reach 100 ground balls in a single season. Earlier this year, he eclipsed former Dolphin Cameron Mann's top mark of 176 career ground balls; Forbes now sits at 249 with three games left in the regular season. Continued Galloway, "Will Hendrick, Ryan Beville, and Jeremy Winston made the plays down the stretch that we needed to win a marquee game. We are so far away from the potential of this group, and I am already eager to get back with the team Monday to take the next step in this journey." Down one, 9-8, heading into the final quarter, Jacksonville rattled off four straight goals in the first 6:37 to erase its deficit and build a 12-9 lead. The Falcons found an answer at the 6:04 mark, and less than two minutes later junior Eric Applegate notched his fourth point of the day – a wraparound goal past the feet of Air Force goalie Braden Host – with 4:18 to go and right before the officials announced a weather delay due to lightning. After the stoppage, Air Force threatened with back-to-back goals from Andrew Tien (3:27) and Cameron Carter (2:19) to come within one, 13-12. Though the visitors had possession with 15 seconds remaining, Jacksonville remained steadfast on defense, forced a Falcon turnover, and came up with the loose ball to close out the game. Hendrick finished the game with two goals and an assist, while Winston added a goal. Solid two-way play from Beville contributed to the Dolphins' cause as the senior picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover. Sharing time between the pipes, senior Ben Gleichenhaus recorded five saves in the first half before junior Hunter Sells posted three in the second to earn the win (5-4). Nick Hruby led the Falcons with two goals and two assists, while Trent Harper finished 9-for-25 on face offs. Braden Host picked up eight saves in the loss. The Dolphins hit the road next Saturday, April 14 when they take on Richmond at noon.
