UMass scored three straight goals in the final 8:47 to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Drexel, 11-10, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The win snapped Drexel's two-game winning streak as the Dragons fell to 4-5. UMass has now won five in a row and sits at 6-4. Drexel opened the fourth quarter with three of the first four goals to take a 10-8 lead with just under nine minutes to go. Will Manganiello bounced a shot on the run past Hampton Brannan just 28 seconds into the final period to give Drexel the lead. A little more than a minute later, Matt Varian put Drexel up by a pair at 9-7. Jesse Leung trimmed the lead to a goal, but Nolan Fox answered at the 8:59 mark. Fox held on to the ball despite being in traffic in front of the cage and bounced one in for his third goal of the afternoon. That would be the Dragons' last goal of the day. UMass won the face-off and 12 seconds later cut the lead to one on a Buddy Carr goal. A minute later, Drexel committed a turnover that led directly to a transition goal by Deven Spencer evening the score with 7:40 to play. For Spencer, it was his third goal of the night. The Minutemen scored the game winner with 4:33 to go when Ben Spencer bounced a shot into the top corner, beating Chre Teitelbaum, and giving UMass the 11-10 lead. The Minutemen held the ball for the majority of the game's final four minutes. Drexel committed a penalty with two minutes to play. The Minutemen held the ball and eventually gave it up when they committed a shot clock violation. Drexel was able to get the ball into the offensive zone and after a timeout drew up a play. Varian came in from behind the net with four seconds to go, but Brannan made a nice save to give UMass the road win. The game was tied on six different occasions and no team led by more than two. The Minutemen scored two goals in the first 47 seconds to take the early lead, but Zach Manns and Fox scored midway through the period to even it at two. UMass got a goal from Charlie O'Brien late in the second and took a two goal lead early in the second on a Chris Connolly goal but again Drexel answered. Marshal King scored two goals in a span of 3:31 to even it at 4-4. The second goal came on the man up and after another UMass penalty, Drexel took the lead as Reid Bowering tallied an extra-man goal. Drexel would head to intermission up by a goal. In the third quarter alone, the game was tied on three occasions. Fox picked up his third career hat trick in the loss. Manganiello and King each scored a pair, but it wasn't enough as Drexel struggled taking care of the ball. The Dragons committed 16 turnovers, including seven in the third quarter. The Minutemen, who had 17 turnovers of their own, seemed to capitalize off of the Drexel mistakes and had a few of their goals in transition. Teitelbaum was saddled with the loss in the cage for the Dragons. The senior made nine saves. Brannon only had six saves on the game, but came up huge when he had to at the close of the contest. Carr had three assists to go with his one score for the Minutemen. UMass won 13 of the 25 face offs. UMass face-off man Noak Rak came into the game at 63 percent, but Drexel's Jimmeh Koita did a good job of getting the Dragons the ball. Koita had six ground balls and just one turnover. Drexel outshot the Minutemen, 35-27, but lost the ground ball battle, 30-22. The Dragons will visit defending champion and preseason favorite Towson next Saturday. The teams will face-off at noon.
