University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse sophomore Jeff Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) scored four times and the Minutemen put in seven of the game's final eight goals as UMass downed Towson, 8-4, at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. Massachusetts improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the CAA with the win. Towson fell to 4-7 and 1-2 with the loss. During the win, Noah Rak (Norwich, Conn.) eclipsed the program record for career groundballs when he scooped up his third of the afternoon and surpassed Jeff Seals (240; 1997-2001). He ended the day 12-of-16 on faceoffs with four groundballs. Jake Lisauskas (Derry, N.H.) added two goals while Chris Connolly (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Billy Philpott (Sandwich, Mass.) scored once each. Four Minutemen provided one assist apiece in Buddy Carr (Exeter, N.H.), Connolly, Ben Spencer (Danville, Calif.) and Kevin Tobin (Reading, Mass). Sean Sconone (East Islip, N.Y.) started in the cage and provided eight saves, including four during the pivotal third quarter when Massachusetts turned its two-goal deficit into a 4-3 lead. Massachusetts scored the game's first goal only to see Towson respond with three consecutive goals – one each by Luke Fromert, Timmy Monahan and Matt Sovero – as the Tigers took a 3-1 margin into the halftime break. The Maroon and White responded to the deficit in the second half with seven of the game's final eight goals, led by three from Trainor during the stretch. Trainor opened second half scoring with a man-up tally at the 12:24 mark of the third quarter when Carr slotted a pass to Trainor as Trainor crashed the crease for the tally. Lisauskas stepped into a 10-yard shot and fired it into the top-left corner for the tie game less than three minutes later. Connolly pushed Massachusetts back in front with 4:48 to go in the frame. The freshman attack fielded a pass from Spencer, turned and fired an attempt mid-jump into the back of the net. After Jean-Luc Chetner briefly evened the game at 4-all with 12:22 left to play, the Minutemen sealed the win with four consecutive scores. Lisauskas started the streak when he snuck his second goal of the afternoon inside the top-right corner at the 8:59 mark. Trainor added back-to-back strikes, including one during a double-team split where he caught Towson goalkeeper Shane Brennan out of position, before Philpott iced the win with 54 seconds remaining. The Minutemen led in shots, 33-26 and groundballs, 23-16. Massachusetts finished 14-of-16 on clears while Towson went 15-for-20. Brennan's record dropped to 3-5 on the season despite his 13 saves made. Massachusetts (8-4 overall, 3-0 CAA) makes its final regular season road trip next as the Minutemen travel to Fairfield for a Sat., April 21 game at Rafferty Stadium. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and Lax Sports Network will broadcast the game live. Follow the team on Twitter (@UMassMLacrosse) and Instagram (@UMassMLAX).
