The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team knocked off the Bellarmine Knights, 9-7, on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The effort was keyed by a stellar defensive effort through three quarters, as the Wolverines held the Knights to only two goals over that span. The Wolverines (2-0) flashed their solid defense in the opening period, holding the Knights (0-2) scoreless. U-M scored two goals in the first quarter, with the opening goal coming from freshman Alex Buckanavage off an assist from fellow freshman Kevin Mack, giving him his first career point. Michigan added its second goal minutes later when junior Brent Noseworthy found the back of the net off an assist from senior BJ Mattheiss. Bellarmine scored its first goal just more than a minute into the second quarter before Noseworthy and junior defender Nick DeCaprio answered with a goals of their own. The Knights added one more before the half to bring the score to 4-2 heading into intermission. Michigan's defense mimicked what it did in the first quarter in not allowing a goal for the entire third quarter, marking the first time that the Wolverines have held a team scoreless for two quarters in a game since playing Marist on March 23, 2016. Curran, as well as seniors PJ Bogle, and Parker McKee, each recorded goals for the Wolverines to put them up by five entering the final 15 minutes. The Knights did not go down without a fight, however, starting the period with two markers, ending their goalless drought. Noseworthy promptly responded with six minutes left in the quarter, completing his hat trick and giving him eight goals through the first two games of the season. Bellarmine answered again as they scored back-to-back goals within 35 seconds of each other, making it 8-6 with just over five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Junior Rocco Sutherland scored when it mattered most for the Wolverines, again extending the lead to three goals with 3:43 left on the clock. Bellarmine then scored its fifth and final goal of the period, which brought the scoring to an end at 9-7. Sophomore Matt Trowbridge went the distance in goal; he finished the game with 10 saves and allowed seven goals, after allowing only two goals over the first 48 minutes of play. Sutherland led U-M with four ground balls, while Noseworthy notched his hat trick with a team-high eight shots. The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time this season when they face the No. 18 Penn Quakers on Saturday (Feb. 17) at noon at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
