BOSTON – Playing in his final regular-season home game, senior Ryan Hilburn scored twice in the final four minutes, including the game winner with 29.5 seconds to play, to lift the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 8-7 win over Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Hilburn's winner capped a hat trick while junior James Burr recorded four goals and an assist for the Terriers, who improve to an even 6-6 overall and 2-4 in Patriot League play. BU held Army scoreless for the final 18 minutes of the game and scored the final four goals to come away with the victory. Army West Point got a four-point performance (2g, 2a) from senior Conor Glancy and junior Nate Jones contributed a pair of goals and an assist. The Black Knights now stand at 5-5 on the year and 2-4 in league play. HOW IT HAPPENED With his back to the goal at the right crease, Hilburn got around his defender and beat Army netminder A.J. Barretto high to give BU its only lead of the game with 29.5 seconds to play. Army was able to officially claim the ensuing faceoff but a turnover proved costly and the Terriers hung on for their first-ever win against the Black Knights. Hilburn created the first tie of the contest at 7-7 with 3:36 left in regulation. The Black Knights scored the first three goals of the day to take a 3-0 lead with 9:45 left in the second quarter. Burr got BU on the board just 18 seconds after Army's third goal off an assist by freshman Chris Gray. Off a man-up situation, Hilburn netted his first of the day with 8:42 to play in the opening half. Glancy notched his second tally with 4:01 remaining in the second before Gray beat the first-half buzzer, scoring with three seconds left to make it a 4-3 game at the half. Army pushed its lead to three again by scoring the first two goals of the third quarter from the sticks of Nate Jones and Sean O'Brien. Burr found the back of the net with 7:23 left in the third to make it a 6-4 game but Connor DeWitt scored for the Black Knights to secure a three-goal cushion once again. Burr started the four-goal run to victory by scoring the final goal of the third quarter and the first marker of the final quarter. MCSORLEY'S MAGNIFICENT DAY Sophomore Joe McSorley was outstanding on Saturday as he made a career-high 16 saves, including several from point-blank range. His previous career high was a 14-save performance at Harvard on March 20. McSorley has allowed just seven goals in each of the last two contests. LIPTON ANCHORS THE TERRIER DEFENSE Senior Isaac Lipton had a monster day on defense for the Terriers. He caused three turnovers and gathered five ground balls. Lipton now leads the Terriers with 18 caused turnovers and is second on the squad with 35 ground balls. GAME NOTES Senior Jack Wilson's assist on Gray's first-half buzzer-beater extended his point streak to 55 games but his goal streak came to an end at 10 contests. Gray (1g, 1a) and sophomore John MacLean (2a) each finished with two points. Gray has recorded at least two points in eight straight games and became just the second player in program history to record 50 points in a season. Army was the only Patriot League team the Terriers had not earned a win against in their five-year history as a varsity program. The teams were even in both shots (38) and ground balls (28). Graduate student Brian Badgett gathered three ground balls and caused one turnover. Freshman Sean Christman won eight faceoffs and recovered five ground balls. Prior to the game, the Terriers honored their 10-member senior class, which was playing its final regular-season home game. The game was televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. UP NEXT BU will begin a two-game road stretch to close out the Patriot League schedule with a visit to No. 12/11 Loyola Maryland next Saturday (April 14). Game time is set for noon.
