WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (3/24/2018) -- Freshman Brennan Kamish posted two goals – but they were the biggest scores of the game – as the rookie tied the contest and then netted the game-winner in overtime as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team went on the road and knocked off the defending MAAC champion Monmouth Hawks, 9-8, on Saturday. Detroit Mercy (4-5, 2-0 MAAC) had a 5-2 lead at the break but Monmouth (3-5, 1-1 MAAC) grabbed an 8-7 advantage with 5:14 left in the game and that stood until six seconds left in regulation when Kamish came around the net and fired one high, right past the goalie to tie it up. In overtime, Detroit Mercy won the faceoff and less than a minute into play, senior Alec Gilhooly fed Kamish to the right side of the net and he did the rest, beating the keeper to the left side and sending the Titans to their third 2-0 start in conference play in school history. Seven Titans scored in the game with Kamish and junior Patrick Walsh posting two goals apiece, while freshman Brett Erskine had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Alex Jarzembowski won 11-of-20 faceoffs – including the only one in overtime to help set up the game-winning goal – and had a team-high five ground balls. Redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin made 11 saves, senior Will Kane had two caused turnovers and two ground balls and senior Charlie Hayes had three ground balls and scored a goal with a man down. Detroit Mercy had a 5-2 lead at the break, with a goal on the man down and one with the man up. The Titans also led 6-3 early in the third when the Hawks struck for three straight to knot it at 6-6 after three periods. The Titans came back to take a 7-6 lead on a man-up goal by senior Sean Birney, but Monmouth would regain the lead, 8-7, until Kamish tied it up with six seconds remaining. The Titans will return home next Saturday, Mar. 31, as they face Quinnipiac at Noon at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac. First Period: The Titans had three shot attempts early, but Monmouth took a 1-0 lead at the 10:31 mark. Detroit Mercy tied it at 1-1 as senior Lucas Ducharme had his seventh goal of the season at 6:13 and Monmouth was also called for a penalty. With the man-up, Erskine set up Walsh, and he gave the Titans at 2-1 lead with 5:25 left in the period. Shamblin made two saves down the stretch as the Titans led 2-1 after the first. Second Period: The Hawks tied it at 2-2 with 11:32 on the scoreboard. The Hawks then won the faceoff and had three shot attempts, but did not score, and when the Titans got the ball back, Walsh buried a shot into the net for a 3-2 advantage with 8:37 remaining. Shamblin made four saves over the next four minutes and with the Titans a man-down, senior Pat Masterson caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and found Hayes, who scored to give the team a 4-2 lead at 4:13. With less than a minute left, junior Matthew Vangalen located Erskine and he found the back of the net for a 5-2 advantage at the break. Third Period: Monmouth scored to make it 6-3, but after a save by Shamblin, the Titans pushed it back to a three-goal lead as freshman Ryan Figueiras recorded his first collegiate marker with 9:31 left. Monmouth would take control the rest of the period scoring three goals as the game was tied at 6-6 going into the fourth. Fourth Period: The Titans jumped back in front on a Monmouth penalty as Erskine fed Birney and he put it in to give the red, white and blue a 7-6 lead with 12:16 remaining. The Hawks were able to register two more goals for an 8-7 lead with just 5:16 on the clock. Shamblin made his 11th save at the 2:28 mark and the defense forced a turnover with 1:48 left to get the ball back. After the Titans unleashed three shots and with the time winding down to just six seconds, Kamish was able to come around the cage and beat the keeper high, just under the crossbar, to tie it up. Overtime: Jarzembowski won the faceoff in overtime and the Titans took possession as Gilhooly passed it to Kamish, who put in the game-winner just 46 seconds into the extra period. Game Notes: The Titans now lead the all-time series, 4-2, which includes three road victories and two come-from-behind wins on the road Detroit Mercy's Chris Kolon and Monmouth's Brian Fisher both attended Rutgers between 1995-2001 and were teammates for two seasons Detroit Mercy started 3-0 in the MAAC last season and 2-0 in 2012 The Titans came into the game third in the MAAC on the penalty kill at 63.6 percent, allowing just 12 goals in 33 opportunities, and held Monmouth to just 1-of-6 on the extra-man attack Kamish is the second Titan freshman on the year to score the game-tying and game-winner as Erskine accomplished the feat at Mercer earlier this season Birney now has sole possession of eighth in school history with eight man-up goals Hayes is just the eighth Titan in school history to score a man-down goal and the first since Brandon Beauregard's man-down score against Ohio State in 2015, also a 9-8 win.
