Dylan Schulte recorded a hat trick, Bryce Wasserman added two goals and five assists, while Noah Lode came up with nine saves in in goal, leading the Monmouth men's lacrosse team to a 17-4 victory over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon at Hameline Field. With the win, the Hawks, who dropped a 9-8 double-overtime decision to No. 18 Princeton in their season opener, improve to 1-1 on the season while the Seahawks, who were coming off a double-OT loss as well, by an 8-7 count at Lafayette, fall to 1-2. Senior midfielder JP Pawela notched the first goal of the day, an unassisted blast from 15 yards out, to give Wagner an early 1-0 lead. Monmouth then reeled off eight consecutive goals in taking a comfortable 8-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Nick Warren then turned in an outstanding individual effort for the Seahawks, winning the faceoff that followed Monmouth's eighth goal, before collecting the groundball, sprinting ahead of the field, and slamming home a fast break goal, making it an 8-2 game at the 3:09 mark of the first half. Monmouth's Casey Kimmel then found the net with just six seconds left in the half to give the Hawks a 9-2 lead at the break. After Hunter Jones scored the first goal of the second half to extent the Monmouth lead to 10-2, Wagner tallied consecutive goals. With 12:54 left in the third quarter, sophomore attackman Nic Ancona scored off an assist from senior attackman Andrew Streilein. Then, at the 9:21 mark of the third, Streilein tallied his second point of the day, firing home an unassisted score to draw the Seahawks to within 10-4. This is as close as Wagner would get, however, as the Hawks scored the game's final seven goals. Monmouth held the advantage in shots (42-28), ground balls (32-27), and faceoffs (14-11). The Hawks were 0-of-2 on extra-man opportunities while the Seahawks did not have any EMO's. In goal, junior Matt Sefcik came up with 12 saves in the game's first 49:53 before giving way to junior Omar Alhagiko who came on to mind the net for the final 10:07. Senior defenseman Andrew Park paced Wagner in both ground balls and caused turnovers with six and two, respectively. After opening the season with three games within an 11-day period, beginning with an 11-5 win over Manhattan on February 10, the Green & White will now have a 10-day break between games as they take the field next on Saturday, March 3 at Dartmouth in a 3:00 p.m. faceoff The Wagner-Dartmouth matchup kicks off a three-game road stretch for the Seahawks, which will continue with games at VMI (3/6) and Quinnipiac.
