ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Attackman Dave Little (Jr / Vienna, Va.) broke a 74-year old school record with nine goals, while Brady Dove (Sr / Stevensville, Md.) tied a school record with 21 faceoff wins to lead the Navy men’s lacrosse team (4-6, 2-3 Patriot League) to a 14-9 victory over visiting Lehigh (4-4, 2-3 PL) Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. “This was our biggest game of the year,” said sixth-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell. “We needed to get this win today as we head down the final stretch. To rebound on Tuesday and get a win against Dartmouth and see it carry forward is fantastic. It’s amazing what a little confidence does for you.” “What can you say about David Little! To score nine goals on nine shots is a remarkable accomplishment. He hasn’t been 100 percent healthy until this week, so it was nice to get him back on Tuesday and see him play so well today.” Little’s nine goals, scored on a remarkable nine shots, eclipsed the previous single-game school record for goals set by Robert Booze who scored eight against Drexel on March 27, 1943. It also broke the Patriot League single-game record of eight accomplished by six different players, including most recently by Bucknell’s Todd Heritage against Hobart on March 10, 2012. The total also marks the most in NCAA Division I this season and is tied for 18th most in a Division I game all-time. Little came into the game having scored multiple goals just three times in 24 games, including one hat trick (4 goals) which was in his collegiate debut on Feb. 8, 2015 against VMI. He entered the game with 17 career goals, including eight this season. Midfielder Ray Wardell (Jr / Babylon, N.Y.) also put together a solid performance with a career-high three goals on three shots. Entering the game with six career goals, he had never scored multiple goals in a game prior to today’s contest. “He (Little) overshadowed a pretty darn good performance by Ray Wardell (3G) and what about Greyson Torain with one (goal) and five (assists),” added Sowell. “Greyson did a good job of drawing the double and moving the ball.” In a showdown between the nation’s #8 (Dove) vs. #9 (Conor Gaffney) faceoff specialists in winning percentage, Dove’s performance at the faceoff “x” helped propel the offense as he tied his own school record he set just a month ago against Maryland with 21 faceoff wins on 25 attempts. In addition to tying the single-game faceoff record, he also broke Navy’s single-game ground balls record with 17. The previous record was 14 set by Logan West against Bucknell on March 3, 2012. Meanwhile, Dove’s previous career high was 12 against Lehigh on March 14, 2015. The 17 ground balls are the most in NCAA Division I this season. On his second faceoff win of the day which marked his second ground ball of the game, Dove became the first player in program history to reach 300 ground balls and only the fourth player in Patriot League history. He stands #2 all-time on the Patriot League list with 315. One additional school record fell on Saturday when Matt Rees (Sr / Sykesville, Md.) recorded a pair of caused turnovers to become the school’s all-time leader with 75. He passed former teammate Pat Kiernan who amassed 74 takeaways from 2011-14. The Mids jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back as the closest Lehigh would get down the stretch was two on two different occasions (3-1, 4-2). Navy’s defense held the Mountain Hawks off the scoreboard for the first 17-and-a-half minutes before senior middie Cody Triolo drew the double team and found fellow middie Ian Strain for Lehigh’s first goal of the game at the 12:25 mark in the second stanza. The second quarter featured 12 combined goals between Navy and Lehigh, including a season-best seven by the Mids on 11 shots. Lehigh, however, scored two goals in the final 20 seconds of the half to trim Navy’s lead to four going into the break. Little scored all three goals in the third quarter for the Mids, including the record-breaker off an assist from Greyson Torain (So / Glen Burnie, Md.) with 1:42 left in the period. Torain and attackman Ryan Wade (So / Coronado, Calif.) scored the final two goals of the game for the Mids en route to a season-high 14 goals.
