Coastal Carolina's Madeline Bromely scored four goals and added three assists as the Chanticleers downed Stetson, 18-11, in ASUN Conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand. Despite the loss, Stetson head coach Christy Leach was pleased with her team's overall efforts. "I think this was a great competition for us," she said. "It challenged us. This was a pretty even game, they just got a couple more on us." Bromely led an efficient Coastal attack, once which included 36 shots and 30 shots on-goal. But despite the final score, this one started slow for both teams. It took nearly 10 minutes for either team to score. Stetson finally broke the scoreless deadlock when Marina Rotella scored the first her three goals on the day at the 20:29 mark. Coastal eventually got on the board at 19:34, but it was nearly seven minutes later before either team scored again. Jacklyn Lavoie gave Stetson a 2-1 lead with a goal at 12:39. That was Stetson's last lead of the day. Coastal responded to the deficit by scoring seven straight goals for an 8-2 lead with 5:09 left in the half. Stetson cut the lead to 8-4 on back-to-back goals by Hannah Mill. Up by four at halftime, Coastal stretched its lead early in the second half by scoring twice in the opening minutes for a 10-4 advantage. Three straight goals by the Hatters, including a pair by Riley Reagan, pulled Stetson to within 10-7, but Coastal scored five of the next six goals to effectively put the game out of reach. Rotella and Mill each scored three times to lead the Hatters. Shelby Lehmann had five assists, one game after tying a school record with seven against Kent State. Sarah Trupp led Stetson with six ground balls, and Reagan won seven of Stetson's 15 draw controls. With four straight road games coming up, Leach knows the Hatters have some work to do. "Two of our next four games are conference games and we need to win both of them," Leach said. "That's what we have to focus on." The Hatters next visit Howard, 1 p.m., Friday.
