ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's lacrosse team came up just short against No. 10 Penn State, falling 14-12 Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Caroline Allen finished with a team-high six points with two goals and four assists. The junior midfielder gathered her first five points on the Big Red's first six goals. The Nittany Lions netted the contest's first three goals with the first coming on a free position chance from Kristin Roberto 48 seconds into game. Madison Carter then add two more to put the Nittany Lions up three with just under three minutes in. The Big Red got the board with 19:53 left in the first half with an unassisted tally from Allen, which was the first of four consecutive goals for the Big Red. Sarah Phillips brought the Big Red within one with goal 17 seconds later with the assist credited to Allen. The two connected again just over a minute later to even the score. Ellie Walsh added the Big Red's fourth goal of the contest with 15:52 giving the Big Red what turned out to be its lone lead of the contest. The Nittany Lions went on the score four of the contest's next five goals to go ahead 8-5. Though, Phillips notched the final goal of the opening frame to make the cut the Big Red's deficit to two going into the half. Penn State came out firing in the second half, netting four goals in the first 3:38 go ahead 12-6, its largest lead of the afternoon. Freshman Genevieve DeWinter scored the contest's next two goals to cut the Nittany Lions lead to four. The first goal came on free position chance and the other was assisted on by Allen. After a tally from Penn State's Sydney Wolfington with 20:14 left put Penn State up five, the Big Red score three consecutive goals. Shannon Bertscha scored on an unassisted goal with 16:29 remaining. DeWinter followed up with a goal just before the midway point of the second half and Phillips cut the Nittany Lions lead to one with 11:03 to play with an unassisted goal. Penn State's Lauren Craft netted a goal with just under 10 minutes remaining to put Penn State back on top by three. Freshman Shannon Brazier netter her first collegiate goal to cut the lead back to two. With time winding down, Tomasina Leska fired a shot that was stopped in net by Penn State goalkeeper Taylor Suplee and the Nittany Lions were able to run down the clock. Katie McGahan finished the game with nine saves on a total of 20 shots on net, which puts her season save percentage at .500. The Big Red continues its three-game home stretch with its Ivy-opener against Harvard on Saturday, March 2 and concluded with a bout against Upstate rival Colgate on Tuesday, March 5. NOTES TO KNOW Allen tied her career high with four assists, which set previous set against Rutgers last year. Phillips finished with four goals, which ties her career high and is the most she's scored in a game since May 5, 2017 against Harvard. DeWinter netted her first career hat trick.
