POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Women's lacrosse fell to Cornell 18-12 Monday afternoon at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes pulled within one in the first half but Cornell used several runs to pull away for the win. Marist drops to 3-4 on the season. SUMMARY Cornell's offense clicked from the start and opened up the game with a 7-1 run to force a Marist time-out with 17:10 left in the half. Marist's offense found its groove and cut Cornell's lead down to one goal at 8-7. Hailey Wagner was the catalyst for the offense, scoring four goals during the run. Within the last couple seconds of the half, Cornell took advantage of a woman-up opportunity to score and take a 9-7 lead into the locker room. Cornell opened the second half with three goals in the first three and a half minutes. Goals from Samantha Mehalick, Kelly George and Jessica Lasapornara kept the game within four points for Marist. A 3-0 run by Cornell put them up 17-10 with 9:13 left in the game. Marist would find the back of the net two more times, but Cornell was able to burn enough time off the clock and use a big cushion to walk away with the win. STATS Wagner led the offense with five goals. Mehalick had four points. Wagner and Mehalick combined to go 5-5 from free position. Delaney Galvin finished the day with 11 saves, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Cornell outshot Marist in the second half 20 to 9. Cornell's Sarah Phillips led the team with six goals. NOTES Wagner's five goals matches a career high. She also cracks the top ten in career points with 128. Cornell now leads the series 1-0. FROM THE COACH "We played with a lot of heart and I saw a lot of plays I hadn't seen all season." Stated Head Coach Jessica Wilkinson. "I know we played a lot of times with the score not in our favor but we never really play like that. It shows a lot what we're doing on the field and what we hope to bring to MAAC play." UP NEXT Marist will kick off spring break in Florida. The Red Foxes will play Jacksonville on March 17 at 1:00 PM.
