PHILADELPHIA - For the fourth time this season, the sixth-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team found itself in a one-goal game, and for the fourth time, the Quakers won. Penn stormed back from an 8-7 deficit in the second half to take an 11-7 lead and held off a late surge from Cornell to defeat the visiting Big Red, 11-10. The win pushes Penn to 8-1 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in the Ivy League. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Zoe Belodeau and Gabby Rosenzweig were the catalysts again for the Quakers' offense, as the duo combined to score seven of Penn's 11 goals, while Rosenzweig finished with two assists to post a team-high five points on the day. *Belodeau's four goal performance is second only to a five-goal outing against Georgetown earlier this year. She scored each of Penn's last two goals. The sophomore also collected four draw controls. *The win for Penn came despite Cornell owning the majority of possession on the day, as the Big Red totaled 39 shots to Penn's 18. *Junior Mikaila Cheeseman finished with 10 saves on the day, including the game-winning stop with 55 seconds remaining. *Turnovers were nearly even on the day, while Penn was effective in getting the ball up the field, clearing on 21 of its 22 attempts. *Chelsea Kibler was effective with the stick for the Quakers, picking up a team-high five ground balls and causing five turnovers. The five turnovers caused are the most by a Penn player since Natalie Stefan's five CTs last year at Cornell. HOW IT HAPPENED Neither team's offense clicked at a high level to start the day, with each side committing turnovers and unable to score the ball when given the chance. Rosenzweig was Penn's first score of the afternoon, taking it herself from behind the goal to put the Quakers ahead 1-0 nearly eight minutes into the game. The Penn defense was stout, collecting three more turnovers following the Rosenzweig score, but a foul on Kibler gave the Big Red a free position opportunity to even the game 1-1. That would prove to be short lived, as Belodeau switfly collected the draw control and went straight down the middle of the field, giving the Quakers a 2-1 lead just nine seconds later. Penn followed that up with a 2-0 burst with goals from Rosenzweig and Michaela McMahon to hold a 4-1 lead at the 13:19 mark. The Big Red buckled down on defense and retaliated for three straight of their own, tying the game at 4-4, before Rosenzweig found Belodeau for a score and then finished it herself on the free position, giving Penn a 6-4 edge at halftime. Cornell tallied the second half's first two goals to even things at 6-6, and the teams would trade scores, including two goals from freshmen McMahon and Taylyn Stadler. A nifty move from Erin Barry on a free position shot gave Penn the 9-8 lead, an advantage that the Quakers would not relinquish. Belodeau finished home Penn's final two of the afternoon, including another helper from Rosenzweig, and Penn held off a late charge from Cornell including a game-sealing save from Cheeseman with 55 seconds left to grab the win.
