The Basics • Score: #9 Maryland-9, Johns Hopkins-8 (OT) • Records: JHU (2-4, 2-4 B1G) • UM (3-1, 3-1 B1G) • Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field • The Short Story: Hannah Leubecker scored with 3:08 to play in overtime to lift ninth-ranked Maryland to a 9-8 win over host Johns Hopkins in Big Ten action Friday afternoon. How it Happened • Trailing by two with 10 minutes to play, Hopkins scored back-to-back goals in less than three minutes to even the score and eventually force overtime. Mackenzie Heldberg earned a free position shot and instead, passed to Shelby Harrison, who took a couple of steps and buried a low shot inside the left post to pull the Blue Jays within one. Harrison passed to Aurora Cordingley on goal line extended, she curled around the defense and beat Emily Sterling on a left-handed shot with 6:09 to play. • Both defenses got stops over the final six minutes and for the first time in 20 meetings, Hopkins and Maryland would need overtime to decide a winner. • With time winding down in the first half of overtime, Leubecker dodged across the top of the fan and then fired a shot to the bottom left corner to win it for the Terps. • Maryland struck first when Brindi Griffin took a pass from Shaylan Ahearn, spun and scored on a low shot. Hopkins answered when Maggie Schneidereith hit Abbey Hurlbrink in stride in the right alley and she scored on the run at 23:04. Less than two minutes later, Heldberg found Schneidereith open on the doorstep and she beat Sterling over the top to put the Blue Jays on top, 2-1. • Leubecker then sandwiched a pair of goals around a score from Catie May and the Terps held a 4-2 lead at the 14:46-mark. The Blue Jays responded with three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead into the half. Cordingley took a cross-crease pass from Heldberg, faked high and then went low to ignite the three-goal spurt. Following a Kathleen Garvey interception on the defensive end, Heldberg dodged from behind, spun on her defender and scored on a sidearm shot to tie the game with 4:00 to go. • The Blue Jays then grabbed the lead as time expired on the shot clock and with just 23.4 ticks on the game clock. On a restart after a shot out of bounds, sophomore Maeve Barker passed to Heldberg on the crease and she beat Sterling low at the buzzer. Maryland had a chance to tie the game before the half, but Garvey came up with a save on Libby May's free position shot with five seconds to play. • Coming out of the half, Maryland scored three straight to push out to a 7-5 lead at the 14:18-mark. From goal line extended, Cordingley slipped a short pass to Schneidereith, who went over the top on Sterling to halt the run and pull JHU within one. Hannah Warther pushed the Terps' lead back to two with a free position goal at the 10:57, setting the stage for the exciting finish. What it Means • Hopkins falls to 0-20 all-time against Maryland in the first-ever overtime game in the series. In addition, it is the first one-goal game and the first time the Blue Jays have held the Terps to single digits. • Schneidereith now ranks fourth in school Division I history with 219 career points, while Cordingley ranks seventh in assists (56) and Garvey moved into 10th place with 121 career saves. Inside the Box Score • Heldberg led the Blue Jays with a game-high five points (2g, 3a) while Schneidereith and Cordingley had three points (2g, 1a) each. • Hurlbrink and Madison McPherson controlled three draws apiece, while Trinity McPherson picked up three ground balls. Garvey finished with 12 saves, her third double-digit save performance of the season. • Leubecker was the only multi-goal scorer for the Terps, finishing with a game-high four goals. Catie May (1g, 2a) and Ahearn (1g, 1a) were the only other players with multiple points. Sterling made five saves in the win. Up Next • Hopkins is off next week and will return to action on Friday, March 26 at 15th-ranked Michigan. Opening draw at U-M Lacrosse Stadium is slated for 7:00 pm.
