PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 14 Rutgers women's lacrosse (10-1, 2-1) defeated No. 13 Michigan (9-3, 1-2), 13-8, on Thursday afternoon in Piscataway. Graduate student Taralyn Naslonski produced a season-high seven points on six goals and an assist to move into second on the Scarlet Knights' all-time points list, as RU produced its fourth win over a ranked foe this season and locked up its first double-digit win total since the 2010 campaign. Rutgers forced the Wolverines into 17 turnovers and tallied three goals on player-up opportunities to secure its second Big Ten Conference win in as many chances. Naslonski netted five of her game-high six goals in the first half, junior Cassidy Spilis collected four goals and classmate Jenna Byrne added two goals and an assist to pace the Scarlet Knights' offense. With the win over the No. 13 Wolverines, RU owns victories over four ranked opponents in its last five outings, as it has also worked wins over No. 18 Temple (March 9), No. 21 James Madison (March 13), No. 20 Johns Hopkins (March 26) this season. Rutgers' 10 wins to open 2022 are its most since it secured 11 back in 2010. "We're just getting better and better," said head coach Melissa Lehman. "We spoke about how this game needed to be about us and doing the little things right, and I think we took that to heart today. I just love how our defense is jelling and getting better each game." After Michigan scored to open the game, Rutgers responded with a 3-0 scoring run in a three-minute span to close the quarter. Spilis netted a free position opportunity, Naslonski added an unassisted goal and graduate student Marin Hartshorn found Spilis for a 3-1 lead over the Wolverines at the end of the quarter. Naslonski's goal during the first 15 minutes moved her past Katie Batiuk (2004-07) for second on RU's all-time points list, as the captain needs just 10 points to become the program's all-time leader in the category. "She just had a desire and fire in her eyes today," Lehman said. "We just kept getting her the ball and you could tell this one meant the world to her." It was all Naslonski in the second quarter, as she accounted for all four of the Scarlet Knights' goals before the break. However, Michigan hung around, as a goal from Claire Galvin in the final 30 seconds of the half made it just 7-5 game heading into the locker room. RU's defense held strong in the third quarter, as it allowed just one goal in the next 15 minutes of play. Rutgers forced the Wolverines into five turnovers during the stretch, while goals from Byrne and sophomore Ashley Moynahan gave the Scarlet Knights a 9-6 lead before the final stoppage. Rutgers closed the game with a 4-2 scoring run. Naslonski added her sixth off a pass from Byrne, Byrne followed off the feed from rookie Emalie Clothier and Spilis netted back-to-back goals to help the Scarlet Knights to their first win over Michigan in four chances. NOTES Graduate student Taralyn Naslonski is 10 points away from passing Denise Reed (1987-90) for the most points in program history. Naslonski also needs just two goals to pass Batiuk for second in goals at Rutgers with 161. Junior Meghan Ball secured the 150th draw control of her career in the win over Michigan and is second in program history with 151 draw controls in three seasons "On the Banks". Ball, Spilis (130) and Hartshorn (127) all eclipsed 100 career draw controls this season and sit No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, on RU's all-time list. Under head coach Melissa Lehman, RU is has won eight out of its last 11 games against ranked opponents dating back to last season. 4/15/21 vs. No. 13 Penn State (W, 17-16) 4/18/21 vs. No. 11 Maryland (W, 16-14) 4/29/21 vs. No. 23 Ohio State (W, 19-13) 4/30/21 vs. No. 3 Northwestern (L, 24-14) 5/14/21 vs. No. 10 Drexel (W, 16-13) 5/16/21 vs. No. 6 Stony Brook (L, 20-8) 3/9/22 at Temple (W, 15-9) 3/13/22 at No. 21 James Madison (W, 12-5) 3/20/22 at No. 4 Maryland (L, 16-6) 3/26/22 vs. No. 20 Johns Hopkins (W, 12-11) 3/31/22 vs. No. 13 Michigan (W, 13-8) Rutgers moved to 5-3 all-time against Michigan.
