PHILADELPHIA - In a game that never featured a lead larger than two goals, the No. 8 University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team held off a late charge from the 15th-ranked Duke Blue Devils and got a game-winner from Zoe Belodeau to move to 7-1 on the year with a 10-9 victory. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Penn has won three games over ranked opponents on the year, each by a one-goal margin. *The Quakers' team-leader in points flexed her muscle again today, as Gabby Rosenzweig featured a goal and four assists for five points. She now boasts 27 assists on the year. *Penn was efficient in free position opportunities, scoring three times in its five chances. The Quakers held Duke to only a 2-of-8 clip. *The Blue Devils held an 8-4 advantage in draw controls at halftime, but the Quakers responded to win five of the nine in the second half. Belodeau led the team with four. *Senior captain Lauren O'Mara was key for Penn on defense, causing three turnovers and collecting five ground balls. The Quakers forced eight of Duke's 15 miscues. *Mikaila Cheeseman earned the win in goal, collecting eight saves. *Penn improves to 6-5 all-time against Duke, with three-straight wins over the Blue Devils. *The win was Head Coach Karin Corbett's 55th career victory over a ranked foe. HOW IT HAPPENED Neither offense was able to scratch the scoreboard in the opening moments of the game, as each team collected two saves and caused turnovers with their defense. Duke opened the day's scoring nearly 10 minutes in, and quickly doubled its advantage on a free-position opportunity less than a minute later. A save from Cheeseman gave Penn the ball back, and Gabby Rosenzweig made quick work on the offensive end to score the Quakers' first of the game. Rosenzweig's effort kickstarted a run for the Quakers, as Abby Bosco evened the game following traded turnovers from each team. It was Belodeau to give Penn its first lead of the afternoon, capitalizing on a feed from Rosenzweig, and the Quakers pushed their advantage to 4-2 following a give-and-go play from Rosenzweig to Elyse Decker. The Blue Devils peppered the goal with two-straight shots and converted on their second, drawing within one goal, before tying the game on the ensuing possession with a free position score. The Quakers returned the favor, however, earning a free-position chance themselves after Belodeau corralled the draw control, with Michaela McMahon putting the Red and Blue back up, 5-4. Right back were the Blue Devils though, tying the game and then retaking the lead at 6-5 to end the half. The second half started similar to the first, with physical defense and missed attempts on goal keeping the score at 6-5, before Bosco tallied her second of the day on Penn's sixth-straight free position opportunity. The teams traded scores, with Penn's coming from freshman Taylyn Stadler, before the Quakers seized control, getting another free-position score from Erin Barry and a quick draw and score from freshman Robin Panzarella, to put the game at 9-7 with just over 15 minutes to play. Duke's North would assert herself to tie the game though, scoring two straight, leveling things at 9-9. The Quakers took a timeout and got exactly what they wanted, as Belodeau rocketed home a score after a feed from Stadler, giving Penn the 10-9 advantage. The Red and Blue defense closed out the victory, as Penn killed off the extra-man opportunity and caused two turnovers in the final 2:40, one each from O'Mara and Katy Junior, to move to 7-1 on the year. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers will turn their attention back to Ivy League play, hosting Cornell next Saturday, March 23 at Penn Park.
