The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins-10, #24 Ohio State-9
• Records: JHU (2-3, 2-3 B1G) • OSU (1-5, 1-5 B1G)
• Location: Columbus, OH • Ohio Stadium
• The Short Story: After falling behind 6-1 early, the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored 24th-ranked Ohio State, 9-3, to defeat the host Buckeyes, 10-9, in Big Ten action Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
• Hopkins struck first when senior Aurora Cordingley found freshman Abbey Hurlbrink open in the left alley just 3:02 into the game. Ohio State answered however, scoring six straight over a span of 19 minutes to push out to a 6-1 lead.
• The Blue Jays ended the run with a pair of goals in the final 47 seconds to make it a three-goal game at the break. Graduate student Mackenzie Heldberg found a Cordingley cutting across the middle of the fan, and she scored on a left-handed shot. Senior Keegan Barger followed with a free position goal with just nine seconds remaining to make it a 6-3 game at the break.
• Hopkins pulled within two early in the second half when freshman Eliza Bowman beat Jillian Rizzo on a quick-stick off the Maeve Barker feed. Liza Hernandez then sandwiched a pair of goals around a Hurlbrink free position goal and Ohio State led 8-5 with 18:52 to play.
• Junior Claire Mills collected a pass from Cordingley in the middle of the fan and beat Rizzo from in-tight to spark a 5-1 Blue Jays' run to end the game. Cordingley followed with three straight unassisted goals and Hopkins led 9-8 with 3:31 on the clock. It was the first time the Blue Jays' had led since it was 1-0.
• Jamie Level answered on the other for the Buckeyes, scoring on the run six yards out and tying the game with 2:49 to go. Hopkins won the ensuing draw but Rizzo came up with the stop to give the ball back to Ohio State. The Blue Jay defense forced a shot clock violation and took over with 32 seconds. After a good clear, senior Shelby Harrison drew a free position and converted with just 7.1 left to put JHU on top for good.
