The Brown women's lacrosse team battled No. 16 Dartmouth until the end but the Big Green pulled out a 12-11 overtime victory in the Ivy League opener on Saturday at the Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Sophomore Claire Jeschke's (Syracuse, N.Y.) free-position goal at 4:09 of the second half forced overtime, where the Big Green won the opening draw and Katie Bourque converted on a free-position shot for the game winner at 4:36. The second half included six ties in an evenly matched game. "It was what you expect from an Ivy League game, a great battle start to finish," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We are excited to learn from the game as we have a quick turnaround this coming week with a game on Tuesday." Junior Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led Brown (2-2, 0-1 Ivy League) with four goals while sophomore Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) had another strong game with a hat trick and an assist. Dartmouth (3-0, 1-0 Ivy League) opened the game with three-consecutive goals in the first 12 minutes to take the lead but the Bears cut the deficit with tallies from sophomore Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) (15:52, free position) and Mosenthal (15:19). Bourque scored her second goal of the afternoon at 14:01 before junior defender Allison Lanzone (Wayne, Pa.) recorded her first-career goal at 11:10 to again pull Brown within one. After another score by Bourque, the Bears put together a three-goal run to take a 6-5 lead into the break. Freshman Nathalie Ahn (Hopkinton, Mass.) started the sequence at 5:17 with Mosenthal (3:48) and DeRosa (2:07) following. Both teams logged 12 shots apiece on net with sophomore Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) stopping four for the Bears. Brown held the edge in draw controls at 7-5. Each team recorded a free-position goal with Dartmouth going 1-for-4 and Brown 1-for-3. The Big Green netted the first goal of the second half to knot the game 6-6. Mosenthal completed her hat trick at 23:28. After Bourque's fourth score, DeRosa registered a player-up goal for the Bears at 20:37, again giving Brown a one-goal lead (8-7). Ellie Carson scored two straight at 17:14 and 14:12 to give Dartmouth its first lead since 5:17 of the first half. Mosenthal (13:16) and DeRosa (12:10) converted on back-to-back free-position shots to put the Bears back on top, 10-9. The back-and-forth play continued as Bourque and Carson scored consecutively at 9:52 and 7:26, respectively, to give the lead back to Dartmouth (11-10). Jeschke then tied the game at 4:09 on a free-position tally and Tucker made a key save in the waning seconds to force overtime. The Big Green outshot the Bears by a 11-7 margin in the second while Brown held a heavy 10-2 advantage in draw controls, which included seven by freshman Emmie Lau (Pittsburg, Pa.). The Bears also went 3-for-3 on free-position shots while the Big Green were 1-for-3. Dartmouth won the important first draw in overtime and Bourque converted on the free position at 4:36 for her sixth goal of the game. Overall, Dartmouth had a 24-19 advantage in shots while Brown controlled the draw, 17-8. The Bears were 4-for-6 on free positions while Dartmouth was 3-for-8. Parisella and Jeschke both added a goal and an assist in multi-point efforts for the Bears while Jeschke also contributed five draws. Lau concluded the day with 10 draw controls overall. Sophomore Jordan Torres (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Mia Mascone (Irvington, N.Y.) each added two caused turnovers on defense. Tucker concluded the game with nine saves, adding five in the second frame. In addition to Bourque's six goals, Carson added five while Tori Chanenchuk assisted three goals for the Big Green. Kiera Vrindten earned the win in net with six saves, all coming in the opening 30 minutes.
