A timely late goal by first year midfielder Anna Vetsch, and a big stand by the defense on Brown's final possession, helped the Yale women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 11-10 win vs. Brown Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs trailed for most of the game, and were down by three with 13 minutes left, but scored three straight to come away with a win. Vetsch's shot from distance rocketed past Brown goalie Erin Tucker to cap the comeback. But it was the work of sophomore goalie Clare Boone that set the stage for the rally. She made 12 saves, including eight in the first half to keep Brown (3-3, 0-2 Ivy League) from pulling away despite a 17-6 shot advantage in the first 30 minutes. The Bears led 10-8 after a goal by midfielder Claire Jeschke with 7:49 to play. But after that the Yale defense shut Brown down, and the offense gradually mounted a comeback. First year midfielder Bri Carrasquillo's goal off an assist by sophomore attacker Olivia Penoyer -- one of four assists on the day for Penoyer -- cut the lead to one with 3:59 left. Penoyer then scored on a free position with 2:53 left to tie the game. That set the stage for Vetsch's heroics, but after a turnover by Yale (3-2, 1-1 Ivy League) in the final minute the Bulldogs needed one more defensive stand. They got it, as sophomore defender Kenya Boston knocked the ball loose and Boone scooped up the ground ball to help clinch the win. Carrasquillo finished with a hat trick, including an acrobatic goal off a Penoyer assist midway through the second half. Penoyer also had a hat trick, while sophomore midfielder Payton Vaughn added a pair of goals. Junior midfielder Olivia Markert and senior attacker Vanessa Yu also scored, with Yu adding an assist. Yale heads to California next week for games at Fresno State and UC Davis.
