LOWELL, Mass. -- Freshman attackman Conor Foley tied a career-high with seven points (2g,5a), while sophomore goalie Matt Murakami (Long Grove, Ill.) tied a career-high with 14 saves for the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team in the 11-9 loss against Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex in the non-league Kennedy Cup Challenge contest. The River Hawks drop to 2-3 overall, while the Mintutemen improve to 2-2 overall on the young season. Murakami amassed 10 of his 14 saves in the second half for the River Hawks, while Foley recorded a team-high five shots on goal. "It was a good game, there were good points for us and things we really need to work on," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "I thought we gave away a lot of opportunities, some untimely penalties, some things we can show a little more discipline in these tight games, that's what we are working towards." The River Hawks outscored the Minutemen, 5-3 in the second half. Mass Lowell scored three straight goals to begin the third quarter on tallies by Dakota Clark (Bedford, N.H.), Ben Gill (West Newbury, Mass.) and Kyle LaForge (Tyngsboro, Mass.). LaForge added his second tally in the fourth quarter, but it was enough to complete the comeback. UMass Lowell trailed UMass, 8-4 at halftime. Gill scored his first career goal for UMass Lowell with 1:24 to go in the first quarter, while Jake Lining (Rochester, Mich.) and Foley also added goals in the first half for the River Hawks. UMass opened the game with four of the first five goals, but Isaac Bot (Calgary, Alta.) got the River Hawks on the board just 2:11 into the opening stanza. Sophomore face-off midfielder Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) won 10-of-21 face-offs for the River Hawks. UMass' Matt Knote stopped 12 shots in his second win of the season for the Minutemen. Gabriel Procyk totaled a game-high five goals for Massachusetts. UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, February 29th against Dartmouth College. Game time is 1 p.m. from Cushing Field Complex.
