The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Iona, 10-6, in non-conference action on Sunday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. After trailing 5-4 at the break, the Bears outscored the Gaels, 6-1 in the second period en route to their victory. The win improves Brown to 5-3 on the year while Iona moves to 5-4. Down by one going into the second, the Bears' defense stepped up and sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) made seven consecutive saves to hold the Gaels to just one goal on her way to a career-best 13 saves. Junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) scored three of her four goals in the second half to power the offense. Brown had a 9-1 draw control advantage in the opening period but that did not translate into goals as the Bears trailed by one at halftime. Zaffino notched the first score of the afternoon at 28:37 before Iona countered at 22:51 on a free-position shot (Jenna Tolzmann). Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) next added two straight at 17:28 and 16:47 for a 3-1 Brown lead but the Gaels would shut down the Bears for the next 16 minutes and go on a 4-0 run to gain a 5-3 advantage. Mosenthal added her third of the day just before the end of the stanza (0:35) to bring the score to 5-4. Zaffino quickly tied the game at five just 27 seconds into the second and added her third of the contest at 23:42 to give Brown a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) scored at 15:17 on a free-position shot and Zaffino netted her fourth at 11:00 to up the Bears' lead to three (8-5). Mosenthal registered her fourth at 8:45 to conclude the run. In Brown's five-goal run to open the second, Bigelow closed the door on any Iona scoring chance, making seven-straight stops. Tolzmann finally put one in for the Gaels at 3:15, her third of the game. Junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) capped off the scoring at 2:10 with her 13th of the year. Moinuddin and DeGennaro finished the contest with a goal and an assist while freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) also added a helper. The Bears outshot the Gaels in the second, 15-12, while Iona had the advantage in the first, also 15-12. After a heavy 9-1 advantage in draw controls for Brown in the first, each team controlled four in the second. Defensively, freshman Allison Lanzone (Wayne, Pa.) caused a game-high four turnovers while sophomore Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) added three. Bigelow turned away a career-high 13 shots while Shannon McCaffrey made 11 saves for Iona. The Bears will next travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on No. 11/9 Penn on Saturday, March 24 starting at 3:00 p.m. on the Ivy League Network.
