A career-day from freshman Megan Carney powered the Orange attack as No. 3/3 Syracuse won its seventh straight. The Orange stifled a second-half surge from No. 21/rv Virginia Tech to come away with a 14-13 victory, the team's second one-goal win in a row. "We did what we needed to do and held on for the victory," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Now we have 10 days off to regroup and get ready for the end of the regular season and push toward post-season play." Carney led 'Cuse scorers with nine points off four goals and five assists. The nine points put her at No. 10 on Syracuse's single-game record list. She is the first player to post nine points in a game since Alyssa Murray scored six and added three assists vs. Virginia in 2014. Carney was assisted in the 14-goal effort by four-point performances from junior Emily Hawryschuk (3g, 1a) and senior Nicole Levy (1g, 3a). HOW IT HAPPENED Syracuse (13-2, 5-1 ACC) got off to a strong start, scoring four goals in the first four minutes of play. Redshirt junior Mary Rahal, Carney, junior Vanessa Costantino and freshman Meaghan Tyrrell all contributed to the 4-0 run. Virginia Tech (8-6, 1-3 ACC) finally got on the board with a goal by Julia Bolte, but the Orange quickly answered with two more goals of their own. The Hokies tallied their second goal with 20:27 to go in the half to make the score 6-2. Carney got the Orange back on the board off an assist from Levy to push the score to 7-2. The Hokies pushed back, scoring two off the stick of Paige Petty to cut the deficit to three. From there, it was back and forth for the rest of the half, with Syracuse scoring last to take a 10-6 lead into the break. The 'Cuse picked up where it left off in the first half after intermission, getting goals from Carney and Hawryschuk to give the Orange their largest lead of the day at 12-6. Virginia Tech wouldn't go quietly, however, and scored three straight from Petty and Taylor Caskey to cut the deficit to 12-9 with 20:44 left in the game. Syracuse scored two more as Costantino and Hawryschuk found the back of the net before the momentum swung to the Hokies. Virginia Tech rallied to go on a 4-0 run, but the Orange's defense would hold tight and shut down the rally to give Syracuse the 14-13 victory. OF NOTE The Orange are now 5-1 in one-goal games this season as the victory was the third one-goal win in the Cuse's last four games. The victory also improved the squad's record against teams ranked in the top 20 to 7-2. Syracuse is now 9-0 in games where it wins more draw controls. The Orange won the draw battle 16-13 against Virginia Tech. UP NEXT Syracuse has 10 days off before traveling to Chapel Hill to take on No. 6/5 North Carolina. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
