The Brown women's lacrosse team was defeated by Columbia, 14-12, on Saturday at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The Lions held a two goal lead with three minutes remaining in the contest and shutdown multiple scoring chances by the Bears. Brown falls to 8-6 overall and 1-5 in the Ivy League with the loss while Columbia moves to 6-8 on the year and 3-3 in conference action. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) paced the Bears in scoring with five goals while sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) added a hat trick. Brown and Columbia traded goals to open the contest all the way to a 5-5 game with DeGennaro (27:42), junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (23:46), Mosenthal (17:54), junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (14:32) and senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) (8:42) scoring for the Bears. Chelsea Witteck gave Columbia its first lead at 6:59 on a free-position shot. DeGennaro countered with a free position of her own to knot the contest at six at 4:09 but the Lions would score three unanswered to grab a 9-6 advantage. Mosenthal added her second tally with 56 seconds remaining to pull the Bears within two (9-7) at the break. Columbia held a slight 22-21 lead in shots for the first stanza while Brown had a one draw control advantage on the Lions (9-8). Each team was 1-for-4 on free-position shots. Witteck opened the second half with a score to push Columbia's lead to 10-7 at 28:07. Mosenthal then scored two straight (24:30, 20:28) to bring the Bears within one (10-9). After a goal by Lindsey Ewertsen (16:38), DeGennaro (14:22) completed her hat trick and junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) (13:35) got in the scoring column to tie the game 11-11 for the first time since the first half. Orna Madigan and Alexandria Absey provided Columbia with a two-goal advantage (13-11) with 7:34 left in the game. Mosenthal registered her 51st goal of the season and fifth of the day at 6:00 to bring the Bears within one. Ewertsen closed out the game's scoring with 3:00 left for the final of 14-12. Columbia would win the ensuing draw control after Ewertsen's goal. Senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) then stopped a shot by the Lions to give the Bears possession. Brown had seven shots, including two free positions but could not find the back of the net. Kelsey Gedin also made two saves at the end of the game to help preserve the victory for Columbia. Brown held the shot advantage in the second at 22-19 and had the draw control lead 6-5. The Bears were 0-for-2 on free-positions shots, both coming with time winding down, while the Lions were just 1-of-5. Gedin concluded the afternoon with 14 saves for the Lions while Karlsson stopped 10 shots, which tied a season high and also giving her double digit saves in back-to-back games. With her five goals today, Mosenthal has 51 for the season, moving her into second place at Brown for single season goal output. The rookie trails only Brown Hall of Famer Suzanne Bailey's '91 60 set in 1991. Mosenthal also tied Danielle Mastro '14 for fifth place for points in a season with 58 (51G, 7A). Moinuddin also moved up on Brown's all-time charts with her two assists on the day to bring her season total to 20, 10th best all-time at College Hill. The Bears next play in their final regular season game on Saturday, April 28 when they host Dartmouth at 12:00 p.m. for Senior Day. The contest will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
