– Chris Connolly provided eight points on four goals and as many assists, Zack Hochman won 26 faceoffs and Matt Knote made 14 saves as the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team secured a 17-12 victory over Albany at Garber Field on Saturday. The win improved UMass to 4-2 overall and extended the program's current win streak to three games. The Great Danes dipped to 2-2 on the year with the loss. The Massachusetts starting attack tallied 16 points, including Connolly's career-high-tying eight. Additionally, Kevin Tobin notched five via three goals and two assists while Gabriel Procyk scored one and helped out on two more tallies. Procyk's pair of assists marked the first multi-assist game of the sophomore's career. Billy Philpott totaled his second consecutive game with four goals after he reset his single-game best with four scores in the win over No. 1 Yale on Sat., Feb. 29. Devin Spencer added the team's fourth hat trick of the day through a three-goal outing. Mike Tobin notched three points on a goal and two assists while Jeff Trainor had two points (goal, assist). Charlie O'Brien rounded out the scorers with an assist. Hochman's day reset his single-game bests for faceoffs won (26), faceoffs taken (33) and groundballs (13). The 26 faceoffs Hochman won tie the freshman for the second-most victories in a single game across NCAA Division I during the 2020 season. He made the grade despite facing three Great Danes over the course of the game in Anthony Altimari (4-18), Danny Mastropaolo (3-13) and Jake Piseno (0-2). Knote's 14 saves earned the rookie his third consecutive game with double-digit stops. He was instrumental in the team stymieing Albany's comeback effort as Knote made six saves during the pivotal fourth quarter. Massachusetts only led 13-11 entering the final 15 minutes as Tehoka Nanticoke's game-high five goals balanced out the UMass offense. However, the Minutemen knocked Nanticoke off-track in the fourth as Knote turned aside each of Nanticoke's three shots in the frame. As the defense clamped down on the Great Danes, Spencer provided his second and third scores of the game as part of a four-goal run that extended the UMass advantage to 17-11. Connolly and Kevin Tobin also found the back of the net during the scoring spree. The Maroon and White held a sizable advantage in groundballs, 38-22 and shots, 46-35. The Minutemen were also 3-of-5 during extra-man opportunities while Albany finished the game 0-for-7.
