Second-ranked North Carolina got five goals and an assist from Jamie Ortega and three goals and a career-high six assists from Katie Hoeg to beat fourth-ranked James Madison, 18-7, on Saturday in Kenan Stadium in the 2019 season opener for both teams. The game was a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Tournament semifinal, when the Dukes beat the Tar Heels, 15-13. JMU went on to win the NCAA championship two days later. This time, Carolina led from the beginning and did not allow the Dukes to score in the first 8:03 of the game. UNC took a 4-0 lead before JMU scored and led, 9-3, at halftime. The Tar Heels widened their lead in the second half and posted the biggest margin of victory in the history of the UNC-JMU series. Carolina dominated the draw, 22-5, led by a career-high nine draw controls from Gianna Bowe and eight from freshman Brooklyn Neumen in her first collegiate game. Ally Mastroianni added four. "Going into the first game of any season, you're curious about how you're going to respond to being challenged on the field," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "You really don't know who you are until you get challenged and see how you respond to things. I was really impressed with our draw unit today. I thought they did a great job even though there are a lot of new faces there for us. I think the momentum of the game was set with what our guys did on draws because we got the first three draws and scored three goals off that. Gianna Bowe in particular was effective for us." Nine Tar Heels scored goals in the victory. Freshman Tayler Warehime scored four times, and classmate Elizabeth Hillman had a goal and an assist. Bowe, Kara Klages, Ally Mastroianni, Taylor McDaniels and Scottie Rose Growney each scored single goals. Logan Brennan and Maddie McDaniel each scored twice for JMU. Hanna Haven had a goal and two assists. Taylor Moreno (1-0) played well in goal for Carolina and picked up the win, making 10 saves and allowing seven goals. JMU's Molly Dougherty (0-1) had nine saves for the Dukes in goal. UNC out-shot JMU, 32-19. "We were playing the defending national champions, who started our season last year with a loss and ended our season with a loss," Levy said. "We obviously have a tremendous amount of respect for them and their program and what they've accomplished. To start the year going against a great opponent and playing as well as we did today is a great starting point for us." Carolina will return to action with a pair of home games next weekend, hosting High Point on Friday at 6 p.m. and East Carolina on Sunday at noon.
