HARRISONBURG, Va. – Eighth-ranked Virginia used a five-goal run in the first half and had three players register hat tricks to down No. 7 James Madison by a 14-9 ledger in NCAA women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Sentara Park. The Cavaliers improve to 8-3 on the year, while the Dukes fall to 7-2. The loss ends JMU's 19-game home win streak, marking the team's first setback in Harrisonburg since March 25, 2017. Avery Shoemaker scored five goals with an assist, and Lillie Kloak had four goals and a helper to lead the Cavaliers' offense. Nora Bowen tallied three goals and Sammy Mueller had five assists. Charlie Campbell earned the win in cage with 15 saves. JMU was paced by junior midfielder Halle Duenkel, who turned in her fourth hat trick in five games with three goals and an assist. Senior attacker Hanna Haven and sophomore midfielder Charlotte Haggerty each scored twice, and sophomore attacker Katie Checkosky added two assists. Senior defender Caroline Sdanowich produced a career-high eight draw controls while also collecting four ground balls and causing two turnovers. Haven also had career highs of two caused turnovers and three ground balls, and junior defender Emma Johnson picked up four ground balls. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Molly Dougherty made 10 saves in the loss. With the game tied up at 3-3, Virginia scored five consecutive goals in just over 10 minutes to take an 8-3 lead with 5:58 to play in the first half. JMU ended the 13-minute drought with a goal by Haggerty to trail 8-4 at the break. Teams traded goals early in the second, but the Cavaliers got back-to-back goals by Shoemaker in a 100-second span to give the visitors an 11-6 lead. JMU never drew closer than four the rest of the way. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE Both teams recorded 33 shots on the night and 24 shots on goal. JMU held a convincing 15-10 advantage in draw controls, including an 8-4 mark in the second half. It's the first game this season JMU led in draws and lost. Both squads tallied 18 ground balls, but Virginia took an 8-6 edge in caused turnovers. Turnovers were nearly even, as JMU had 14 and UVA had 13. JMU had three player-up opportunities but failed to score on any of Virginia's yellow cards. The Cavaliers, however, had both a player-up and player-down goal in the second half. UP NEXT JMU returns to action on Sunday, March 24 when it hosts No. 2 Maryland. The Terrapins (8-0) play at No. 23 Penn State on Thursday before making the trek to Harrisonburg to close out the week.
