Alyssa Adams scored a career-high six goals while several freshmen made big contributions to help the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team capture its first win of the season with a 15-14 defeat of visiting Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati. The Bearcats, who moved to 1-4 on the year, had four other players score twice to propel them to victory while the Chippewas fell to 1-2 overall.
// QUICK NOTES
• Cincinnati moved to 1-4 on the year while Central Michigan fell to 1-2 overall
• The Bearcats moved to 4-1 in the all-time series with the Chippewas, rebounding from last year's 12-11 overtime loss on the road last year
• UC scored a season-high 15 goals, surpassing the 11 scored against Louisville in the season opener
• Adams scored a career-high six goals, one better than the five she scored last year against Marquette (2/15/19)
• The six goals scored by Adams is the most by a UC player this year and the second-most points in a game behind the seven tallied by Monica Borzillo against Ohio State (four goals, three assists)
• Dani Mlkvy recorded eight draw controls, a career-high, while also collecting a team-high five ground balls and adding one caused turnover
• Peyton Mottice tallied the second multiple-goal game of her career with two scores while Haley Brady also scored two for her first career multiple-goal game with a pair as well
• Kate Carney added two goals, her first multiple-goal game of the year
// HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Bearcats responded with three of their own, including back-to-back goals from Adams, to take a 3-2 lead with 23:58 to go in the first. After the Chippewas tied it, the Bearcats got goals from Brady and Sam Mlkvy to take a 5-3 lead. But, CMU would score two in a row to tie things at 5-5 with 13:39 remaining in the half. The Bearcats once again responded, this time to the tune of four goals in a row as the Adams scored twice to bring her game total to four as UC lead, 9-5, with 4:04 remaining. CMU closed the half on a 3-0 run to make it 9-8 at the break for the hosts.
In the second half, the two teams traded three goals twice. First, Carney, Brady and Borzillo each scored to make it 12-9 in favor of UC before the guests responded with a trio of goals to pull within one (12-11). The Bearcats extended their lead back to four once again as Adams scored twice and Mottice added her second to put UC in front, 15-11, with 3:33 to play. CMU would go on to score three more goals, including one with one second remaining, to bring about the 15-14 final.
