Dartmouth men's lacrosse dropped a seesaw affair to Hartford, 12-11, on a snowy Tuesday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field after playing through 10 ties. Ben Martin had a great game, ending up with six points from five goals and an assist. Harlan Smart, George Prince and Matt Paul all had multi-point performances. George Christopher got his first start of the season, ending up with nine saves. Tucker Brown handled most of the faceoff duties, going 8-for-20 at the X. "That was a wild game," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "Between the conditions and the finish, that was one of the crazier games I've been part of. For our team, we need to learn how to finish games. We need a little more composure down the stretch and be able to make little plays here and there. That's the difference between winning and losing. "I'm proud of Ben," Callahan continued. "He stepped up and led the offense. With some injuries, it's good to see guys step up, like Tucker at the X and George in the goal. George gave us a chance to win the game and made a couple really big saves. It was tough to see the ball with the white background and he did a good job making plays. We played hard, but we didn't play hard enough down the stretch." For the second game in a row and the fifth time this season, Dartmouth (2-8) got on the board first, a goal courtesy of Martin at 12:15. Hartford (3-9) answered three minutes later and the score remained tied as both teams struggled to keep track of the white ball in whiteout conditions. After switching to a yellow ball late in the quarter, the Hawks netted their second at 2:06, only to have Martin respond less than 40 seconds later (2-2). A combined six goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter. After two lead changes and a pair of ties, Paul recorded his 20th marker of the year to put Dartmouth up with 1:24 to go. It looked as if the home team would take that one-goal lead into the half, but Hartford had a different idea, finding the back of the net with 48 seconds remaining to head to the third tied (5-5). An additional eight goals were scored in the third, with neither squad being able to get more than one goal ahead before the other team tied things up. Trailing by one and with less than a second left with the extra player, Martin netted his fourth of the day with 19 ticks left to tie the score for the ninth time (9-9). After such an eventful third quarter, the fourth was very quiet. With defense working in overdrive, zero tallies were scored in the first nine minutes. The Hawks broke through at 5:53 and Dartmouth worked hard over the next three minutes to try and even things up, but a number of shots missed the mark. The perseverance paid off, as markers by Martin and Smart 30 seconds apart put the Big Green up for the first time since the second quarter. That did not last, as Hartford scored a pair of tallies, the last being with 23 seconds left, and Dartmouth ran out of time to make another move (12-11). On Saturday, Dartmouth will host Princeton at 2 p.m.
