The Yale women's lacrosse team started Ivy League play Saturday at Reese Stadium with a major test, facing a No. 12 Penn team that has won 11 Ivy titles in the last 13 years. The Bulldogs held the Quakers to 11 goals, tying their season low, and outshot them 32-31 but unfortunately wound up on the short end of an 11-5 final score. Junior midfielder Olivia Markert scored a pair of goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Clare Boone made 11 saves. Yale (2-2, 0-1 Ivy League) trailed just 5-3 at halftime, creeping closer on a goal by sophomore attacker Olivia Penoyer shortly before the horn. Penn had averaged more than seven goals in the first half of its first three games, so the Bulldogs holding the Quakers to three marked a sign of progress for the Yale defense. Penn (4-0, 1-0 Ivy League) opened the second half with four straight goals. First year midfielder Bri Carrasquillo stopped the Quakers' run with her first goal of the day, pulling the Bulldogs within 9-4 with 15:43 left in the game. But goals would prove hard to come by for both teams in the final 15 minutes, with Yale's lone tally coming from Markert with 7:03 left. Yale limited Penn attacker Gabby Rosenzweig, an All-American in 2018 and 2019, to just one goal and one assist. Rosenzweig had six goals and nine assists in the Quakers' first three games. In addition to Carrasquillo, Markert and Penoyer, Yale also got a goal from first-year midfielder Anna Vetsch, her first career tally. Senior attacker Vanessa Yu had an assist. Junior defender Kelsey Dunn and sophomore midfielder Payton Vaughn tied for the team lead with three caused turnovers each. Carrasquillo added four draw controls. Yale hosts Brown next Saturday.
