The Basics • Score: #16 Johns Hopkins-12, #18 Georgetown-11 • Records: JHU (3-1) • GU (3-1) • Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field • The Short Story: Senior Miranda Ibello scored with just 8.3 ticks on the clock to lift the 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 win over 18th-ranked Georgetown Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. How it Happened • In a series that has seen five one-goal decisions in the last nine meetings, including the last two, it's no surprise that this one came down to the wire. Morgan Ryan scored with 28.9 seconds remaining to knot the score at 11 and the game seemed like it was headed to overtime. But the Blue Jays had other ideas. Senior Ellie McNulty won the ensuing draw and quickly carried into the offensive end. With time winding down, Ibello worked her way free in the middle of the fan where junior Maggie Schneidereith slipped her the ball. Ibello caught the pass with her back to the goal and fired a low shot that beat Haelle Chomo with 8.3 seconds on the clock. McNulty won the draw again and Hopkins ran out the clock. • Natalia Lynch put Georgetown on the board just 20 seconds into the game, but Hopkins answered with back-to-back goals from sophomore Aurora Cordingley and McNulty, in a span 50-second span, to go up 2-1. That was just the first of a series of runs by both teams over the a 32-minute span. Emily Ehle and Michaela Bruno responded with a pair of goals, also just 50 second apart, to grab the lead back for the Hoyas with 25:46 to play in the first. • Schneidereith tied the game at the three when she knocked down a Hoya pass on the clear and went in all alone on Chomo for the score. Junior Mackenzie Heldberg followed with a shot from six yards out to put the Blue Jays on top 4-3. JHU then capitalized on another failed GU clear to go up 5-3 midway through the half. Heldberg forced a bad pass and Schneidereith skied to grab the pass. She then found senior Nicole DeMase open on the doorstep, and she hitched once and then beat Chomo. • Bruno pulled Georgetown back within one with quick shot from left goal-line extended and then Morgan Ryan converted a free position shot to tie the game at five with 8:52 on the clock. Cordingley got her second of the game on a free position shot, followed by a Heldberg goal in-tight and it was 7-5 Hopkins at the 3:20-mark. The Hoyas weren't done for the half as Ehle cashed in on a failed Blue Jay clear with 20.3 seconds to go to make it a one-goal game at the half. • Georgetown wasted little time opening the second-half scoring as Francesca Whitehurst won the draw and raced to the cage before finding an open Taylor Gebhardt for the score just nine seconds in. Liz Liotta then cashed in on a free position shot and the Hoyas held an 8-7 lead less than five minutes into the half. Schneidereith ended the Hoyas run when she beat Chomo top shelf on the run to tie game. That was short-lived however as just 60 second later, Ryan scored on a free position shot to put GU back up 9-8. • After being held scoreless for nearly 12 minutes, the Blue Jays got back-to-back goals in a 20-second span to take a 10-9 lead. Cordingley dumped a pass to Heldberg in the slot and she rang a shot off the left post and in to tie the game. Off the ensuing draw, McNulty curled around the cage and found herself wide open for the sidearm shot to stake Hopkins to the one-goal lead. • Liotta answered quickly for Georgetown, tying the game for the eighth time, with 5:57 to play. Heldberg had a response, and an emphatic one at that. Coming out of a timeout with just five seconds on the possession clock, Schneidereith lost possession, but Heldberg scooped up the ball and blew a shot past Chomo to put JHU up 11-10 with 3:07 to play. That set the stage for a thrilling conclusion, that saw two goals in the final 29 seconds, as Hopkins earned the 12-11 win. What it Means • Hopkins evens the series at 12 wins each and has won four of the last five meetings. The last three meetings have all been decided by just one goal. • Schneidereith tied her career highs with six points and four assists. She also moved into a tie for 10th in school Division I history with 49 career assists.
