A broken play left a pile of broken hearts scattered across Washburn Field on Monday afternoon. Blake Amiatu scored after a mad scramble for the ground ball on the opening faceoff of the second overtime period to give the Colorado Mesa University men's lacrosse team a 13-12 victory over Colorado College. With neither team able to win the draw cleanly, Jake Eickelman eventually picked up the ground ball and got it to Carson Schwark. As the CC defense slid toward the Maverick's top scoring threat, he dished the ball to Amiatu, who was alone in front of the net for the game-clinching shot. The Tigers had their chances in the first overtime, but Nolan Hoffman stopped back-to-back shots by Elliot Nelson, and then Dylan Brown was denied on a diving effort after coming out from behind the right post. Colorado College also had a pair of chances to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Jack Haims sent a rocket off the crossbar with 1:20 to play and then Hoffman made a save on a shot by Dylan Wells. CC appeared to be in control when it utilized four-goal run to open a 6-2 lead Haims' second goal. However, Schwark scored twice in the final three minutes to help the Maverick's pull to within 7-3. Colorado Mesa scored the first three goals of the second half to level the score for the first time, but the Tigers answered with three of the next four goals to take a 10-8 lead. CMU got one back with six seconds to play in the third quarter, and then took its first lead after goals by Hunter Holcomb and Trent Pernell. Brown tied the game at 11-11, and after Amiatu put the Mavericks back in front, Conrad Song scored with 3:13 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. "It was a great game between two great teams," head coach Sean Woods said. "Someday, I might be able to enjoy watching it, but right now my heart is breaking for our guys. They played their guts out today." Anders Erickson led the Tigers with two goals and three assists. Nelson scored twice and set up a third goal, while Brown finished with two scores. Isaac Atencio led CC's defensive effort with seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Colorado College finished with a 64-37 advantage in total shots and a 36-27 edge in ground balls. Both teams won 15 faceoffs. Colorado College Standouts Ben Anastos finished with eight saves. Winston Chodnicki won eight of 15 faceoffs and picked up three ground balls. Colorado Mesa Standouts Nolan Hoffman made 11 saves in the second half. Carson Schwark scored four goals and dished out three assists. Trent Pernell scored four goals. Notes Colorado College slipped to 8-2. Colorado Mesa improved to 3-1. Next for the Tigers Colorado College begins its second trip to the East Coast on Friday against Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Va.
